CMI RABBINIC SEARCH COMMITTEE - UPDATE
By Michael S. Dimenstein and Sarah B. Greenblatt, Co-Chairs
Search Status The CMI Rabbinic Search Committee (Dana Astmann, Rachel Alderman, Karen Baar, Julie Chevan, Kim Braun Cohen, Jim Horwitz, Dalton King, Marsha Moses and Adam Schaefer) continues its sacred charge of reviewing Rabbinic applications and talking with prospective candidates about the opportunities for solo rabbinic leadership with our unique congregation. Since August, we have received 10 applications primarily from candidates in southern states and from as far away as Israel and Brazil. Per policy of the Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR), a synagogue our size (430 member families) can expect that candidates have 3 years plus post-ordination experience. Demographically, we've had a mix of candidates with between 3-5 years to as many as 20 years of post-ordination experience. Last year we received a broader mix of 18 candidates primarily from the west and midwest who were interested in a senior/solo rabbi position in the northeast. It seems this year that the pool of rabbis looking for new positions is smaller than it was last year, and we've learned from our CCAR contacts that there may also be fewer synagogues looking for rabbis.
The following are the important qualities (based on a congregational survey in 2022) we seek for our next Rabbi. We have shared this information with CCAR in our application, as well as the critical first priorities we believe our next rabbi will need to assume in making the initial transition to CMI.
Important Qualities of Our Next Rabbi We seek a Rabbi who engages deeply with members, who teaches and inspires learning and discussion, and who appreciates congregants’ unique perspectives and life experiences. Throughout CMI’s history we have been blessed to have rabbinic leadership that has embraced our congregation’s social justice values, progressive priorities, and spiritual needs. We are seeking a Rabbi who will continue to take us further by challenging us to do more and to do it better. We hope our next Rabbi will also provide engaging, approachable, and responsive spiritual leadership, pastoral support, officiation of life cycle events, and donor cultivation within our diverse congregation – while inspiring the next generation of Jewish and congregational leaders. We also hope our next Rabbi will have skills in developing and delivering sermons that spiritually inspire, intellectually stimulate, and challenge our diverse multi-generational congregation — and provide a source of reflection and comfort to congregants as we navigate a most challenging world.
Critical First Priorities for Our Next Rabbi As our next Rabbi joins our congregational family, it will be important to have the capacity to get to know our CMI members and the greater New Haven community, and to understand our history and current position within that broader community. It will also be important to focus on building meaningful relationships that promote the engagement and growth of our membership base, lay leadership, and financial health, as well as support our ongoing Tikkun Olam, pastoral and spiritual initiatives. It will be critical that our new Rabbi is comfortable developing strong connections with our youth (especially current and pre-B’nai Mitzvah), their families, and members of all generations to support their engagement in Jewish education, values, and identity development. And it is necessary that our new Rabbi support congregants as together we address challenges facing Israel and Judaism today.
We thank those who have participated in our in-person visits with promising candidates. We will continue to provide updates as we move forward. We welcome your thoughts and questions as we proceed with further consideration of more candidates in the next month.
B'Shalom,
Michael & Sarah

JCARR
Celebrating a holiday for the first time in a new culture can be daunting. When JCARR’s Family 9 said they would like to make a Thanksgiving dinner – less than a month after they arrived in the United States – volunteers made it easier for them. One person provided a Halal turkey; another explained the traditional side dishes; they chose options that appealed most to them – rice instead of mashed potatoes, for example. The three daughters surprised us, though, when we invited them to learn to make Thanksgiving pies, and they turned out to be whizzes. As the photos show, they made apple/cranberry and pumpkin pies, which turned out perfectly.
The children in the family are excited about starting school tomorrow! Four children will attend three different schools, so they will have lots to discuss as they compare their experiences.
We are thankful for the work of JCARR volunteers who helped this family move quickly through the first stages of resettlement and we are grateful for the many gift cards JCARR friends donated to help them buy clothing and supplies for school.
Please consider making a year-end donation to JCARR! All donations go into JCARR’s bank account and enable us to continue to provide direct services to refugee families. You can donate online or you can send checks payable to:
The Jewish Federation (with JCARR in the memo line), 360 Amity Road, Woodbridge, 06525. Attention: Jennifer Zuppe.
CHESED TEAM - REACHING OUT TO OUR YOUNG PEOPLE
On behalf of the Congregation, the Mishkan Israel Chesed Committee wants to stay in touch with our young people away at college, boarding school, in the armed forces, or at a distance from the community. To help them maintain their connection with CMI, Chesed committee members would like to send Chanukah greetings and a small gift to these young members of our community. We need your help to make this connection possible!!! If you are the parent, grandparent, relative, or friend of someone who is living at a distance from our local community, please email Nancy Moss Racusin. The Chesed Committee will be happy to follow up!!!
2023-2024 Chai Holy Day Campaign
Thank you to everybody who has already donated to the Chai Holy Days campaign! These generous unrestricted contributions will allow CMI to address some of the financial challenges our congregation has faced. We are grateful to all who help ensure that CMI stays strong now and well into the future.

HAPPY CHANUKAH
Chanukah Family Service & Chanukah Dinner
Friday, December 8 at 6:00 p.m. Dinner at 7:00 p.m.
Please join us for a Family Service celebrating Chanukah. Rabbi Ross and Cantor Giglio will share the story of Chanukah and share with us spirited musical selections! We invite all families to bring a menorah and candles to light together so we can enjoy the warmth of their glow. We will have an opportunity to say the mi shebeirach, read the kaddish list and recite the mourner’s kaddish. If you wish to add additional names to the mi shebeirach or kaddish list, please email Sarah Legassey by 12:00 pm on Friday, December 8. The Torah portion will be Vayeishev.
Dinner
7:00 p.m.
After worshipping together at our Chanukah Family Service, we invite all members to join us for a special Chanukah Dinner. We will have latkes, sufganiyot and more! Please register in advance so we can plan accordingly.
Annual CMI Mitzvah Mall & Mitzvah Day
Sunday, December 3, 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
Instead of purchasing gifts in a retail store, why not use some of that money to buy a warm meal for a person experiencing homelessness, clothing for a family in need or toys for hospitalized children in honor of a friend, relative, teacher, parent or child? Participants experience the gratifying gift of charity (tzedakah) for the holidays as they learn about and donate to non profit agencies. It is a hassle free way to shop that helps those in need. Parents and congregants are encouraged to participate in this event.
The Mitzvah Mall, co-sponsored by the Social Action and Religious Education Committees, is an alternative gift fair. The vendors are non-profit organizations and charities.
CMI Annual Chanukah Torch Run & Celebration
Sunday, December 10, 8:30 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
All interested runners (and bikers) are invited to participate in our annual Chanukah Torch Run. You will meet at the top of East Rock Park at 8:30 a.m. and run to Mishkan Israel (a 2.5 mile downhill course) carrying the authentic torch found in Modiin, the town where Chanukah originated. All ages are welcome to participate. Children through 6th grade must be accompanied by an adult. Please let us know if you are participating by calling the office at 203-288-3877.
Brotherhood of Men and Women Chanukah Candle Sale
Chanukah candles have arrived! Be sure to stock up before they sell out! The BMW will be selling candles on Sunday mornings during Religious School and there are candles in the office to purchase at other times when you are in the building during regular business hours.
Hand dipped in a variety of colors $12.00 per box
Hand dipped white only $7.00 per box
Simple multicolored candles $5.00 per box
Chevra Hands Sunday, December 10 at 10:00 a.m.
Calling all knitters and crocheters! Our dedicated group of quilt-makers, called Chevra Hands, makes shawls, baby blankets and lap blankets that we donate to members of our congregation including newborns, people in the hospital and those who are home bound. Everyone is always welcome to join us.

Nu Haven Kapelye Concert & CD Release Monday, December 25 at 4:00 p.m.
Celebrate the 25th anniversary of the Nu Haven Kapelye! This is the 25th year of the ensemble's annual December 25th concert. This year it's also the CD release event for the band's second album, Nu Haven Style. Come hear a variety of klezmer tunes and Yiddish songs performed by the Nu Haven Kapelye and Kapelye alumni. Plus, join in the klezmer dancing led by Adrianne Greenbaum.
The Nu Haven Kapelye is southern New England’s largest, sassiest, and saxiest klezmer ensemble. The Kapelye blends big band and klezmer traditions to play joyous, foot-tapping, tuchus-shaking arrangements of klezmer tunes and Yiddish song. Formed in the late 1990s, the multigenerational ensemble includes musicians of all ages. Each performance gets you dancing in the aisles, singing the classics, and shaking what your bubbe gave you! Today the Nu Haven Kapelye performs at a broad array of venues and events, from festivals to retirement homes, from bars to bar mitzvahs. In 2019 the Kapelye became a 501(c) nonprofit organization with a mission centering on the joy of playing and hearing klezmer, bringing it to new audiences, and ensuring the music's future.
The concert will serve as a drop-off location for non-perishable food donations to the Jewish Family Services food pantry, serving all of those in need in the greater New Haven community.
Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for seniors & children under 13, and $25 for families of 4 or more. Additional donations are greatly appreciated.
Rosh Chodesh - Tevet Wednesday, December 13 at 7:00 p.m.
Hebrew for “head of the month” – Rosh Chodesh is the monthly holiday that celebrates the arrival of the new moon, marking the start of a new month in the Jewish calendar. In biblical times, Rosh Chodesh was a day of festive meals and refraining from doing business. Later, it became a special holiday for women.
Our intergenerational group provides for female identifying and non-binary individuals thirteen and older a place to meet, form bonds, find meaningful ways to worship and contribute to our community through discussion, song, poetry, storytelling, art, dance, and food. Our programs are themed, based on the interests of group members. Join us! New members of all ages encouraged! To RSVP or if you have any questions, please contact Michele Abrams.
