Life Is Delicious

One of our core values as a congregation is the care and uplifting of our broader community, lived through our long history of community service and activism.  For over twenty years, the Life Is Delicious program has provided home-cooked, high quality meals to those who need them.  As many of you know, Life Is Delicious has had a long standing relationship with the Columbus House Shelter in New Haven, particularly in the winter months where extraordinary need requires them to open an emergency overflow shelter.  One Sunday every month, Life Is Delicious cooks a meal at CMI and serves it at the shelter. We also cook and serve meals when Columbus House sends 12 men to various churches and synagogues in the New Haven area as part of the Abraham’s Tent program.  Sadly, all of that came to a halt during COVID.  Columbus House suspended all its volunteer programs.  Abraham’s Tent was cancelled two years in a row.  Now, after three years, we are restarting the vital work of Life Is Delicious in our beautiful, newly-renovated kitchen.

During the time Life Is Delicious was suspended, many of its active volunteers moved, left for college, or have drifted away.  So, as we renew ourselves for this season, please help us in renewing this valuable program, so central to our identify as a congregation.  All are welcome to volunteer – we’ve had participants from 5 to 90, families, singles, the young and the old.  You do not need to know how to cook as there are plenty of ways to help aside from cooking.  It is always a great time for a great cause. If you are interested in getting involved, please contact Aaron Singer or Peter Alpert.

SOCIAL JUSTICE

MLK MURAL - Town of Hamden MLK39 Mural depicts individuals tied to CMI

The Town of Hamden unveiled its MLK39 mural honoring Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as part of the town’s 2023 Juneteenth celebration. The mural, one of 39 being mounted in communities across Connecticut, now graces the Dixwell Avenue facing wall of Hamden’s Miller library.Designed by the very talented mural artist Emida Roller, it depicts both historic and current trailblazing individuals from Hamden along with Dr. King. In the mural, Dr. King is shown standing side by side withRabbi Robert Goldburg from Congregation Mishkan Israel (CMI). Their images come directly from a photo of the two men that appeared in the New Haven Register following King's historic visit to CMI in October 1961. Scott Jackson, Hamden’s first African American Mayor and current CMI member is also recognized in the mural.

CMI was one of the supporting organizations for the mural project; our members donated to the matching fund campaign, attended the community paint days, and Nancy Yedlin and Mara Balk, from CMI, sat on the town of Hamden MLK39 muralsteering committee.

More than 125 people attended the unveiling of the mural, including CMI members, public officials, individuals, friends, families and descendants of thosedepicted in the mural. RiseUp for Arts and the Town of Hamden’s Arts and Culture department leaders spearheaded the efforts of the many community members who worked together to bring the mural and the unveiling event to fruition.

CMI Rabbi Emeritus Herbert Brockman, was one of the honored speakers at the event remindingall who gathered to "pay tribute to the legacy of Dr King and his presence here in Hamden.  In 1961, Dr King came to Congregation Mishkan Israel to dedicate the new sanctuary in the spirit of brotherhood and allyship which he and Rabbi Goldburgshared inthose early years of the struggle for civil rights.  Rabbi Goldburg saw in Dr King the ancient prophetic spirit our Rabbi endeavored to bring to his congregation and through him, down to us today.  We hope and pray that we continue to be worthy of their legacy."

To learn more about the MLK39 Racial Equity Mural Tour and its other sites in Connecticut, go to https://www.theriseupgroup.org/mlk39.

Here is a great short video from  WTNH TV from the Juneteenth event when the mural was officially unveiled.

Civil Right Journey

Congregation Mishkan Israel is sponsoring a "Civil Rights Journey," Thursday, February 15 through Sunday, February 18, 2024, and I hope you can join us!
I've led this trip several times in the past and am excited by the response at CMI. With the support and participation of CMI's Confronting Racism team, we will be touring Atlanta, Montgomery, Selma, and Birmingham in an educational program that sees the civil rights struggles from a Jewish perspective and meets with those who were personally involved. Please visit  Etgar 36 , our tour organizer, and see the attached itinerary for information about sites, accommodations, meals and more for what promises to be an enjoyable, moving, and memorable educational experience. I hope you will come with us.

A deposit of $300 is required to reserve your space. Your deposit will be fully refundable until November 1, after which a cancellation fee or loss of full payment will apply. We urge you to consider buying travel insurance to protect yourself in case of the unforeseen. Please register early because space is limited to one bus.
All participants will be asked to make their own flight arrangements to/from Atlanta, whether traveling from Hartford, New York or elsewhere. I, and participating members of Confronting Racism, will likely be on the same flight, timed for Atlanta bus pickup. Once our flights are booked, we will let you know the details so that you can make your own arrangements. If you cannot meet us at our designated time, in Atlanta, probably by 8 PM Thursday, February 15, you will have to take a cab or Uber, etc., at your own expense to meet us at our first hotel outside of Atlanta. We are considering a bus or car pool from the Temple to the departure airport.

Information about pricing is below, with more information to follow. Prices include bus, hotels, meals from Friday breakfast through Sunday breakfast, admissions and program. It does not include airfare, bus driver tip, Thursday dinner or Sunday lunch.

The final pricing will be based on our final number of participants but the range is approximately:

  • $1,095 to $1,265 per person for 2 in a room

  • Single supplement of $295

  • 3 in a room brings $60 off per person

  • 4 in a room brings $90 off per person

Our preliminary search shows flights from NYC at about $225 and Hartford at about $425. We recognize that some participants will fly from other cities and some will want to use frequent flyer programs. We will have more flight details as soon as possible.

Please make your reservation.
We are excited about the trip and hope you will join us. Please reach out to me at  RabbiRoss@CMIHamden.org  with any questions.

JCARR - REFUGEE RESETTLEMENT

As we celebrate the beginning of the year 5784, we also celebrate the beginning of JCARR’s ninth year. What better way to begin the year than by welcoming our ninth family?

If you aren’t yet familiar with JCARR, here are the basics. The Jewish Community Alliance for Refugee Resettlement (JCARR) is a partnership of six New Haven-area synagogues and the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven. The six synagogues are CMI, Temple Emanuel, B’nai Jacob, Congregation Or Shalom, BEKI, and Temple Beth David. We are a co-sponsor for Integrated Refugee and Immigration Services (IRIS), Connecticut’s principal refugee resettlement agency. Since its inception, we have sponsored eight families from various countries, including the Democratic Republic of Congo, Syria, Iraq, Angola, Afghanistan, and Ukraine. Each family has a unique story and different strengths and needs.

What does it take to resettle a family? Imagine arriving in a new country, not speaking the language, having no job, having left behind everything familiar.  JCARR volunteers assist recent refugee and immigrant family members in accessing community resources to address their needs for housing, language acquisition, formal education, transportation, social service support, healthcare, religious affiliation, and employment - building self-sufficiency in the community.

What does that look like? It means ensuring we are financially secure and finding an apartment - which is always tricky because we don’t yet know how many family members will be in a referral we accept. The apartment will be furnished with the basics. Volunteers quickly enroll adults in ESL classes and children in school. People learn to speak, read, and write English. Health needs are addressed. Skills such as taking the bus, paying bills, making doctor’s appointments, grocery shopping, and using a computer are taught. Generally, work skills are assessed within six months, and employment opportunities are found. We build on each family’s unique interests and strengths as we help them move toward independence.

If you want to learn more, please get in touch with either Susan Millen or Lina Lawall.

We greatly appreciate your generous donations!  Your support enables us to do what we do: help refugees access and navigate the resources that will empower them to build their lives in our community.

To make an online donation, go to  https://jewishnewhaven.org/refugee-resettlement/give.  Online donations go directly into JCARR's bank account.  You can also send checks payable to The Jewish Federation, with JCARR in the memo line, to The Jewish Federation, 360 Amity Road, Woodbridge, 06525.   Attention:  Jennifer Zuppe.

American Judaism faces many challenges in the coming decades. This was highlighted at Mishkan Israel during discussions that occurred as we transition to a new rabbi. Other Jewish organizations are facing similar issues. Affiliation with synagogues, changing demographics, the changing meaning of Zionism and antisemitism are challenging issues. In these discussions, questions were asked like “Does the history of Judaism in America have lessons for us as we move forward?”

As a result of these discussions, members of CMI and the CMI Brotherhood of Men and Women initiated discussions with other organizations to explore these issues. The outcome is a collaboration of CMI, the Jewish Historical Society, the Jewish Federation and Temple Beth Sholom. Meetings in the spring and summer to discuss possible approaches for exploring these issues culminated in a submission of a proposal for an adult education course.

The series will involve four sessions on Sunday mornings spread throughout the year. Sessions will be two hours from 10 a.m. to noon with leading experts on the four pivotal issues mentioned above. Each session will address these overarching questions:

a. What can we learn from history that helps us strengthen American Jewish life?

b. What can we learn that strengthens the Jewish community going forward?

c. What are the issues that unite us and divide us? What are the commonalities and differences in our thinking within the Jewish community?

d. What are the areas for collaboration across institutions that would strengthen American Jewish life?

The four sessions are:

November 19 Evolution of the American Synagogue

Leader- Rabbi Dan Judson, Provost, Hebrew College, Newton, MA

January 28 Interfaith Families and the Implications for Judaism

Leader-Dr. Samir Mehta, Director of Jewish Studies at the University of Colorado. Currently, Visiting Faculty, Harvard Divinity School.

March 10 Modern Antisemitism-What is different? What are implications for Judaism?

Leader- Dr. LiramKoblentz-Stenzler-Senior Researcher and Head of the Global Far Right Extremism Desk at the Institute for Counter-Terrorism at Reichman University, Visiting Lecturer at Yale University.

April 7 Zionism in America- Jewish Identity and Israel

Leader- Dr. Joshua Shanes- Director of the Arnold Center for Israel Studies and Associate Director of the Jewish Studies Program at the College of Charleston, South Carolina

Two sessions will be held at CMI and two sessions at Temple Beth Sholom, 1809 Whitney Avenue in Hamden. Registration for the four-part series will begin in mid-October. For more information contact Larry Schaefer.

This program has been made possible through generous support from the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven.
