The honors are to light the Shabbat candles at the beginning of the service or to recite the kiddush and motzi (prayers for the wine & bread) at the end of services. If you will be observing a milestone simcha or yahrzeit in the weeks ahead and would like to lead one of these blessings on the Friday night of that week, please contact Allan Hillman.

APRIL GREETERS

MESSAGE FROM RABBI ROSS

“Religion, Politics and Sex: A Conversation for Polite Company” Wednesday, April 3 and April 10, 7:00 PM In Person and on Zoom

The recent Alabama Supreme Court ruling that embryos are entitled to legal protections as children was laced with religious rhetoric. Americans United for Separation of Church and State noted that a concurring opinion from the Court's Chief Justice Tom Parker argued that "We believe that each human being, from the moment of conception, is made in the image of God, created by Him to reflect His likeness." Justice Parker went on to quote the Hebrew Bible when continuing, "It is as if the People of Alabama took what was spoken of the prophet Jeremiah (1:5) and applied it to every unborn person in this state: 'Before I formed you in the womb I knew you. Before you were born, I sanctified you.'"

Never mind that the Chief Justice misinterpreted the biblical verse, which merely speaks poetically to the prophet, Jeremiah, and says absolutely nothing about the moral or spiritual standing of the human embryo. This misguided ruling is yet one of the latest faith-driven attempts to impose one set of religious restrictions into the private lives of those of us who follow differing religious teachings and the demands of conscience.

In "Religion, Politics and Sex: A Conversation for Polite Company," Wednesday, April 3 and April 10, 7 PM, In Person and Zoom, I'll discuss this and other aspects of religiously motivated attempts to trample the boundaries of church and state. I'll draw from my 20 years of work as a religious advocate with Planned Parenthood and my book, All Politics Is Religious, to explore Jewish teachings in support of access to safe and legal abortion, contraception, gender affirming therapy, sex education that provides our teens with medically accurate information, and LGBTQ+ rights. We will also cover the little-known history of clergy activism on behalf of access to reproductive health care.

I hope you can join us!

CMI EVENTS

Shabbat Schmooze Saturday, April 6 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Our first Shabbat Schmooze was so wonderful that we are doing it again and we would love you to join us!

What is Shabbat Schmooze? A Saturday afternoon CMI social for the entire community to come together and enjoy Shabbat in a strictly social context. Snacks, crafts, board games, and storytime will be set up so that all ages can enjoy. Come hang out with friends and make some new ones!

What did our first Shabbat Schmooze look like? Some adults worked on a jigsaw puzzle or played Go while kids and parents colored together, older kids made friendship bracelets, little kids enjoyed a PJ Library Shabbat Storytime, and people of all ages played board games, while snacking to their heart’s content.

This event is lay-led, because CMI staff deserves Shabbat rest. Please RSVP using this google form so we know how many people to expect. If you can contribute to the potluck oneg, please note on the Google form what you plan to bring.
Do you love to play chess, Blokus, or another board game? Please bring it along! We would love to play a round! Do you have a craft to share? You can teach, learn from, or create crafts with and make a new friend. Most importantly, bring yourself! We are so excited to spend a slice of Shabbat with you. Hope to see you there!
Any questions? Email abbyfriedman@gmail.com.

Meeting the Moment Seminar Series - Session 4
Zionism in America- Jewish Identity and Israel
Sunday, April 7 at 9:00 a.m.

Leader-Dr. Joshua Shanes- Director of the Arnold Center for Israel Studies and Associate Director of the Jewish Studies Program at the College of Charleston, South Carolina.

This program has been made possible through generous support from the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven.

CMI Book Club Wednesday, April 10 at noon in the lounge

Our next book is Kantika by Elizabeth Graver, a dazzling Sephardic multigenerational saga that moves from Istanbul to Barcelona, Havana, and New York, exploring displacement, endurance, and family as home. A kaleidoscopic portrait of one family’s displacement across four countries, Kantika―“song” in Ladino―follows the joys and losses of Rebecca Cohen, feisty daughter of the Sephardic elite of early 20th-century Istanbul.

The June meeting will be on Wednesday June 5, and the book choice is
My Father's Paradise by Ariel Sabar.

Rosh Chodesh - Nisan Thursday, April 11 at 7:00 p.m.

Please join us for our monthly celebration of the arrival of the new moon, marking the start of Nisan. We will be discussing “Train Yourself to Always Show Up,” a January 19, 2024 New York Times opinion guest essay by Rabbi Sharon Brous. The essay was adapted from Rabbi Brous’s new book, The Amen Effect, which we will also discuss. Rabbi Brous is the founding and senior rabbi of Ikar, a Los Angeles-based Jewish community.

We will discuss the many ways in which we "show up" for others and need others to show up for us. Come prepared to share a personal story or example if you wish to do so.

It is not necessary to read the book before attending, but it will be helpful if all attendees are familiar with the NYT opinion piece. A copy of the opinion piece will be distributed to all attendees before the meeting upon request. Please RSVP to Joan Shapiro.

Israel's response to the horrors of October 7 has resulted in the deaths of thousands of Palestinian civilians and caused hundreds of thousands to experience dislocation and the destruction of their homes. What are Israel's obligations to seek to minimize such troubling collateral damage generally and how have they informed the IDF's conduct of the war in Gaza against an adversary that appears to operate with no ethical constraints?

You are invited to join CMI member and Yale moral philosopher Shelly Kagan in a discussion that explores these questions. Seating will be limited, so please let us know if you plan to attend by emailing the CMI office

In preparation for the discussion (or if you're interested by can't attend), we highly recommend viewing the Shalom Hartman Institute's recent webinar, "Just War Theory in Israel and the International Community."

Special Talk with Shelly Kagan
