A Message From Rabbi Schaefer

During Hanukkah, the Jewish festival of lights, we celebrate the miracles that God did for our ancestors and continues to do for us. We light a hanukiyah, a menorah with eight branches, to recall the miracle of a small jar of oil that supplied enough light for eight days.

The Sefat Emet, a 19th century Hasidic rabbi from Warsaw Poland, explains that “Especially at this season, when the lights were miraculously lit for Israel even though they did not have enough oil, there remains light even now to help us, with the aid of these Hanukkah candles, to find that hidden light within.”

The Sefat Emet encourages us to use the Hanukkah candles as a mirror to search for the pure spark of Divinity that exists within each of us. Especially during dark times, they remind us that there is always light in the world, because our neshama or soul is a dwelling place for the Divine. As we become aware of that Divine spark within, we are then able to see the Divine within all people. May we all find sources of light during this holiday season and enable others to see light in the world and in themselves as well.

L’shalom,

Rabbi Daniel Schaefer

A Message From Cantor Giglio

Chanukah is the season of light and amongst all the darkness of the past year it needs to shine upon us brighter than ever. Our Chanukah Family Service will be on December 13th. Come hear all the Chanukah songs you love along with the lilting sounds of the Junior Choir’s pure and beautiful voices. What is our favorite food at Chanukah? Latkes! So, what will we be singing? “Lots of Latkes!” You also cannot miss the December 25th concert tradition! The New Haven Kapelye, under the leadership of our own David Chevan brings us an afternoon of unmitigated Klezmer joy that will have you leaping to your feet to dance and sing. You will not be able to find a more fun family event than this. Come to CMI and let the joy of Klezmer replenish your soul. The concert begins at 4:00 p.m.

On Friday, January 6th we will again host our annual MLK Interfaith Service. It is always an incredible event that brings everyone of all faiths together. We are living in times that would have us all pulled apart and turn on one another, that is not who we are and that is not going to be our future. Stand up to hate, bigotry, racism and Anti-Semitism by showing solidarity and joining us this year. In light of what is coming we need to stand together more than ever. Be there!

Every chagim (holiday) is becoming a little more bittersweet for your Cantor. Each one is my last one as I am halfway through my final year and my impending retirement. Do not fret though; I still have six more months to bring you the music you and I love. Please keep your eyes peeled for news of the Cantor’s Concert Fundraiser. It is going to be earlier this year; Sunday afternoon, March 30th. We are “pulling out all the stops” and bringing you a glorious afternoon of Jewish Choral music that is totally family friendly. I have asked Mati Lazar and the Zamir Chorale of New York City to be our guests this year. They are the premiere Jewish Choral Society in the country and the world. There are chapters all over the states and in Israel. Every year they do an extraordinary concert of Jewish Music at Lincoln Center with a choir of 300 on stage. We will not be having that many people but we will be having two, yes, I said two choirs. The adult Zamir Chorale and Zamir Noded, a choir of young adults between the ages of 18-28. I have heard them many times over the years and they never fail to bring tears to my eyes and make my heart leap with joy. I cannot think of a more glorious way to wrap up my wonderful years at CMI. Go to YouTube, look them up and be prepared for your soul to leap. Listen especially to L’Eyla by Nick Page and then do a search for Zamir Noded and listen to just about anything of the options. Then you will understand what makes your Cantor’s soul leap with joy!

ROSH CHODESH

Rosh Chodesh at CMI: We are Not Your Mother’s Sisterhood!

Hebrew for “head of the month”, Rosh Chodesh is the monthly holiday that celebrates the arrival of the new moon, marking the start of a new month in the Jewish calendar. In Biblical times, Rosh Chodesh was a day of festive meals and refraining from doing business. Later, it became a special holiday for women.

CMI’s group sprang from conversations within the Ritual Committee and a keen sense of the lack of a dedicated female space in our congregation. CMI has had a Rosh Chodesh group that previously met about 20 years ago and, as we emerged from the isolation of COVID, it felt like the right  time to revive it.

Our current group has met monthly from September to June since 2022 as a space for female identifying and non-binary individuals thirteen and older to form bonds, share life’s “joys and oys”, and  find meaningful ways to worship and contribute to our community through discussion, song, poetry, storytelling, art, dance, and food. Our programs are themed, based on the interests of group members and responsive to the Jewish cycle of the year.

Our meeting topics are widely varied: we have done everything from hold a Tu BiSh’vat Seder, discuss Purim from a feminist perspective and kindle Hanukkah lights in dedication to women from history - from the Bible to our own personal “heroines”. We have participated in shabbat services, held potluck dinners and this month, on Sunday, December 1st, we will gather for Israeli dancing; finding joy in music, movement, and being together.

We look to volunteers from the group to help facilitate, bringing their own talents, interests and expertise to the group. Some come every month; others join as their schedule allows. Newcomers are always welcome; we urge members to bring their mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends.

We would love to have you join us!  Our next meeting will be held on Thursday, January 2nd from 7:00-8:30. Stay tuned for more details.

To RSVP or if you have any questions, reach out to Michele Abrams, Julie Chevan or Patricia C. Vener-Saavedra.

Thank you to everyone who has already donated to this year's Chai Campaign! We are getting closer to our annual goal of $180,000, but we need all of our congregants to help reach that goal. The past couple of years have stretched Mishkan Israel financially and we hope that you will contribute as generously as you are able to make sure we can flourish.

Please make a gift today -- increments of Chai are welcome, but we also value participation in ANY amount. Please give what you can!

Below are gifts that we have received at the time of press.
