JANUARY GREETERS

ANNUAL MARTIN LUTHER KING JR. INTERFAITH SERVICE

Everyone from the Greater New Haven faith community is invited for our Annual Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Interfaith Service in person and online. We are excited and honored to welcome Reginald Dwayne Betts to deliver the keynote sermon.

Reginald Dwayne Betts is an author, lawyer, Professor at Yale Law School and CEO of Freedom Reads, an initiative to radically transform the access to literature in prisons. In 2021, he was awarded a MacArthur Fellowship. He is also the recipient of a Radcliff Fellowship from Harvard and a Guggenheim Fellowship among others.

He founded Freedom Reads to provide libraries to prisons and has opened 170 such libraries in 31 prisons and juvenile detention facilities across 10 states. As Betts often declares, “Freedom begins with a book”.

He is a frequent guest speaker and explains the post-incarceration experience and lingering consequences of a criminal record through poetry and stories. He has also been an advocate concerning the inequities of the bail system in the U.S. Please join us for this special evening.

Faith leaders from the Jewish, Christian, Muslim, Hindu, Bahai, and Unitarian traditions will join Rabbi Brockman, Rabbi Ross, and Cantor Giglio to lead our engergizing and inspiring service honoring Dr. King’s legacy

Anyone is welcome to join us in person or online via the livestream.

Friday, January 12 at 7:00 p.m.

Reginald Dwayne Betts

Reginald Dwayne Betts is a poet, lawyer and the Founder & CEO of Freedom Reads, an initiative to radically transform the access to literature in prisons.

The author of a memoir and three collections of poetry, he has transformed his latest collection of poetry, the American Book Award Winning, Felon, into a solo theater show that explores the post incarceration experience and lingering consequences of a criminal record through poetry, stories, and engaging with the timeless and transcendental art of papermaking. Betts’s most recent work, released in 2023, Redaction, a collaboration with artist Titus Kaphar, is based on their 2019 exhibition “The Redaction” at MOMa PS1 about the U.S. cash bail system–the state and federal court system’s conditions by which those arrested, but unable to afford bail, remain incarcerated even though they have been neither tried nor convicted.

In 2019, he won the National Magazine Award in the Essays and Criticism category. He is also a 2021 MacArthur Fellow, has been awarded a Radcliffe Fellowship from Harvard’s Radcliffe Institute of Advanced Study, a Guggenheim Fellowship, an Emerson Fellow at New America, and most recently a Civil Society Fellow at Aspen.

In 2020, after staying in New Haven post-graduation, Betts founded the organization, Freedom Reads with a $5.25 million grant from the Mellon Foundation. Freedom Reads, headquartered in Hamden and employing several formerly incarcerated individuals, is the only organization in the country with a mission to provide libraries to prisons, and thereby support the efforts of incarcerated individuals to imagine new possibilities for their lives. To date, Freedom Reads has opened over 170 Freedom Libraries in 31 prisons and juvenile detention facilities across 10 states. These libraries provide a locus where conversation and community can begin inside and outside of prison walls. They are objects of beauty, handcrafted by teams that include people who themselves have served time in prison and populated with a 500-book, carefully curated collection that includes poetry, literature, non-fiction, and more. As Betts often declares, “Freedom begins with a book.”

MESSAGE FROM RABBI ROSS

What Can I Do?

From the moment we learned that Hamas attacked Israel, many have been asking, "What can I do?"  and I'd like to lift up two things that can make a difference.

Learn More

While many of us are constantly monitoring the news and keeping up with social media, I have something else in mind, either in addition, or even instead. There's always more to learn in general, and especially about our Israeli Reform communities and organizations. You can get on their email lists and can receive regular updates and participate in webinars through The Israel Movement for Progressive and Reform Judaism which supports the 50 Reform congregations and communities across Israel. The Israel Religious Action Center is a tireless advocate for a just and egalitarian Israel based on Israeli law and Jewish tradition. The World Union for Progressive Judaism is an international network of Reform, Liberal, Progressive and Reconstructionist movements, including almost 2 million members in 1,250 congregations in more than 50 countries. ARZA, the Association of Reform Zionists of America is also worthwhile. For news updates, the Jewish Telegraphic Agency is a great resource. I check the Times of Israel each day.

Come to CMI

We are in deeply trying times as a Jewish people and CMI community. Along with many of you, I gain comfort and strength from being with you, in the building, present as a community. To be sure, logistics, work, health, accessibility, and other things keep people at home. Yet, I cannot say enough for this community and the mutual spiritual and social support that fills this building at services, during religious school, and more. Many believe that livestream is good enough, but I believe it is much better to be here. Being present, in-person, makes a difference.

With prayers for peace, hope, safety and spiritual renewal,

Rabbi Dennis Ross

EXCITING ANNOUNCEMENT

Dear Congregants,

I am writing this letter to you today with passion and excitement for what lies ahead in the new year for Mishkan Israel.  Upon my hire in June of this year, I was tasked with evaluating our program from a logistical and business perspective. As a part of that evaluation, I was asked to make recommendations for change in the future.  Some of those evaluations and changes have been minor and most likely not visible to many within the school; for example, our advertising and marketing plan.  Other changes have been quite visible, such as our policies, and procedural operations.

The most prominent observations made were our lack of visibility and accessibility to the Hamden community and our lower enrollment for a school with a solid reputation.  Over all, our school was not easy to navigate on the internet to include a poor social media presence, an inadequate website, and no official logo to speak of.  Lastly, our school has a name that we did not feel accurately represents who we are and what we offer.

In developing our strategic plan alongside the Board of Directors, it was determined that a market repositioning was needed for the success of the operation. We should focus resources on developing a stronger online presence, designing a new website, increasing accessibility to information, and lastly a new logo and name.

We are a school that is founded on love, community, inclusion, acceptance, diversity and quality.  Our roots are seeded within the Jewish community of Congregation Mishkan Israel and our values are reflective of the Jewish faith. Over the last few months, the Board and I have worked diligently to design a logo and name which we felt represents our school honoring the foundation in which we were built.

As of January 1st, our school will transition to The Learning Tree Early Childhood Center of Mishkan Israel.  (see logo above) Our new sign is set to go up in the next few weeks. Our social media platform will change from MINS to The Learning Tree. Marketing material; such as stickers and pens will be available to take. Our website is currently under construction and will take some time to go live but we will still be found at cmihamden.org under the new name.

We are excited to see the future growth of the school community.  Our hope is the new name and brand will shed new light and positive long-term development.

We want to express our sincere appreciation for your continued support. Our commitment to delivering exceptional care and early education remains steadfast, and we are confident that our rebranding efforts will contribute to a stronger and more vibrant future for The Learning Tree.

Warmest Regards, Jennifer L. Verrier, M.Ed. Early Childhood Education Director

CONFRONTING RACISM

The Confronting Racism series offers ongoing opportunities for our congregation to learn about and discuss issues and topics aimed at increasing our understanding of systemic racism both historically and in current times. An important aspect of many of the discussions is uncovering and reflecting on our own implicit biases. On Yom Kippur in 2020, with the support of former Rabbi Brian Immerman, a group of CMI congregants worked together to initiate this important and timely program. The Confronting Racism sessions enable participants to reflect upon how Jewish teaching and ethics compel us to confront racism in its many forms. Challenging conversations are often guided by this doctrine “You are not obligated to complete the task, but neither are you free to desist from it” (Pirke Avot 2:21).

Series meetings are open to all CMI members and are announced in CMI’s weekly on-line e-news. Sessions feature presentations by the planning group with facilitated small group discussions, suggested readings, videos, podcasts and other resource materials. The series planners also contribute to programming for CMI’s annual MLK and Juneteenth Shabbat services, Yom Kippur special study sessions and CMI religious school events. The group hosts community events with guest speakers, and represents CMI in various community engagement activities.

Visit the CMI website to see the list of all past programs. To offer your feedback and ideas about the Confronting Racism series, contact any member of the  planning committee: Karen Baar, Nancy Moss-Racusin, Beth Stenger and Nancy Yedlin

Antisemitism Uncovered: Old Myths in a New Era

Please join Rabbi Ross for reflection and conversation
Wednesday, January 17 at 7:00 p.m. in the CMI library

Conversations about antisemitism often turn to the rise in amount and intensity, or the source (political left vs. political right).
The Anti-Defamation League recently produced an internet resource,  Antisemitism Uncovered: A Guide to Old Myths in a New Era, which provides a highly informative historic context for
understanding and responding to antisemitism. We gain a fuller perspective and deeper of the roots and nature of antisemitism by viewing today's troubling events through the lens of Jewish history.

This program is sponsored by the Brotherhood of Men and Women.

MEETING THE MOMENT: What the Jewish Past Teaches About the Future Sunday, January 28 at 9:00 a.m. Interfaith Families and the Implications for Judaism This session takes place at Temple Beth Sholom, 1809 Whitney Avenue, Hamden.

Leader-Dr. Samir Mehta, Director of Jewish Studies at the University of Colorado. Currently, Visiting Faculty, Harvrd Divinity School.

American Judaism faces many challenges in the coming decades. This was highlighted at Mishkan Israel during discussions that occurred as we transition to a new rabbi. Other Jewish organizations are facing similar issues. Affiliation with synagogues, changing demographics, the changing meaning of Zionism and antisemitism are challenging issues. In these discussions, questions were asked like “Does the history of Judaism in America have lessons for us as we move forward?”

As a result of these discussions, members of CMI and the CMI Brotherhood of Men and Women initiated discussions with other organizations to explore these issues. The outcome is a collaboration of CMI, the Jewish Historical Society, the Jewish Federation and Temple Beth Sholom. Meetings in the spring and summer to discuss possible approaches for exploring these issues culminated in a submission of a proposal for an adult education course.

The series now has three more sessions on upcoming Sunday mornings. Sessions will be two hours with leading experts on the four pivotal issues mentioned above.

The folllowing are the other upcoming sessions:

March 10 - Modern Antisemitism-What is different? What are implications for Judaism?

Leader- Dr. LiramKoblentz-Stenzler-Senior Researcher and Head of the Global Far Right Extremism Desk at the Institute for Counter-Terrorism at Reichman University, Visiting Lecturer at Yale University.

April 7 - Zionism in America- Jewish Identity and Israel

Leader- Dr. Joshua Shanes- Director of the Arnold Center for Israel Studies and Associate Director of the Jewish Studies Program at the College of Charleston, South Carolina

Two sessions will be held at CMI and two sessions at Temple Beth Sholom, 1809 Whitney Avenue in Hamden. Registration for the four-part series will begin in mid-October. For more information contact Larry Schaefer.

This program has been made possible through generous support from the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven.

DECEMBER RECAP

Teen Baking Event On Sunday December 3, Jesse Keen and Jeremy Schwartz (both members of the CMI Board and parents of CMI teens), supervised a wonderful event for CMI teens. Jesse taught the teens how to make challah, using her delicious recipe (thanks to Aaron Singer for preparing the dough in advance)! During cooking breaks, they made great progress reclaiming the Teen Lounge as a space of their own. Liev Frahm, Lilo Gaul, Josh Glassman, Penny Keen, and Naomi Schwartz took part in the event.

CMI Annual Chanukah Torch Run

On Sunday, December 10, Jeremy Schwartz led runners at our annual Chanukah Torch Run this year! They met at East Rock Park parking lot at 8:15 a.m. and ran to Mishkan Israel (a 2.5 mile downhill course) carrying the authentic torch found in Modiin, the town where Chanukah originated. Thank you to all who participated and we hope to see more runners/walkers/bike riders next year!

2023-2024 Chai Holy Day Campaign

Thank you to everybody who has already donated to the Chai Holy Days campaign! These generous unrestricted contributions will allow CMI to address some of the financial challenges our congregation has faced. We are grateful to all who help ensure that CMI stays strong now and well into the future.
