MARCH GREETERS

MESSAGE FROM RABBI ROSS

“Spirituality In Our Relationships: Hiding in Plain Sight” Wednesday, March 6, 7:00 PM In Person and on Zoom

Judaism calls attention to spirituality hiding in plain sight. For instance, the Motsi prayer before eating stirs gratitude for having what to eat. The Passover Seder encourages appreciation for freedom. And the teachings of Jewish thinker, Martin Buber, encourage us to recognize the goodness and importance of spending quality time with people.  Judaism cultivates an awareness for food, freedom, relationships, and more, graces that hide in plain sight and would, without Jewish teaching and practice, otherwise pass unnoticed.

Buber’s Jewish spiritual classic, I and Thou, elevates the spiritual dimension of our interactions with others, and now celebrates more than 100 years since publication. I and Thou underscore the Jewish teaching that we show our love for God, as in the V’ahavta prayer, when we love one another -- our neighbor and the stranger – just as the Torah says.

This Jewish spirituality often hides in plain sight, overlooked in the busy daily routine. We just have to pay attention, and the spiritual blessings abound.

I’ll be discussing Buber’s work in “Spirituality in Our Relationships: Hiding in Plain Sight,” Wednesday March 6, 7 PM. I’ll draw from my recent book, A Year with Martin Buber: Wisdom from the Weekly Torah Portion, to illustrate. This program is sponsored by CMI's Brotherhood of Men and Women.

Amidst the sadness and challenge that surround us and our people, here and around the world, I am grateful for the opportunity to draw the positive from the well of Jewish teaching.

I hope you can join us.

Rabbi Dennis Ross

A Note From Cantor Giglio

I am excited to announce that this year’s Cantor’s Concert Fundraiser will be:

Two Cantors and Tevye in:

“A little bit of this, a little bit of that.”

Saturday Evening, May 18, 2024

This year I am bringing Broadway to CMI. We have not one but two Headliners! Our first is Michael Bernardi who starred as Tevye in the Broadway production of Fidder on the Roof. But why have just one Headliner when you can have two! My other Headliner is Cantor Deborah Jacobson an amazing, dynamic, and wonderful performer who always brings audiences to their feet. Last year we were blessed to hear her daughter Maya who was one of the “Mameles”. Maya is one of two apples from Deborah’s tree and you will get to see firsthand where Maya gets her talent! In case you are wondering, the second Cantor is going to be me, your one and only Cantor G. We will be presenting a swath of songs, duets, and trios from many different genres, it will be a joyous event!

Now some background on our Jewish Stars!

Michael Bernardi made his Broadway debut in the 2015 Revival of Fiddler on the Roof where he became the youngest person ever to play the role of Tevye on a Broadway stage. Since then, he’s acted in several films, directed several workshops, married the love of his life, Caitlin and is now the father of their beloved two year old son, Simon. TV credits include: Monk, Days of Our Lives, Law & Order: SVU. Film: Marshall, The House Bunny, Born to Be a Star!

Cantor Deborah Jacobson is a celebrated Cantor, Performer, and accomplished Author. Cantor Jacobson has led her signature ‘Shabbat Unplugged’ service as well as her concerts: ‘Bima to Broadway’ and ‘Broadway to Jerusalem’ in venues across the U.S., Australia and Singapore. She also has performed outside the synagogue world, including at the Van Wezel in Sarasota, FL, Palace Theater in Stamford, CT, Holocaust Museum in Tampa, Fl and at many Cabaret venues. Her 5 albums and performance selections are available on her website; www.cantordeborahjacobson.com and downloadable on streaming services. Her greatest honor is being mother to Maya and Shira Jacobson…and two cats, Oscar and Felix.

Remember to put a big mark on your calendar and save the date! You don’t want to be the one with concert remorse because you missed the evening everyone will be talking about! Invite your friends and family. It will be another Cantor’s Concert Fundraiser to remember. I look forward to seeing all your smiling faces in the audience on Saturday Night, May, 18th 2024!

Save the Date! 2024 Annual Cantor's Concert and Fundraiser

Saturday evening, May 18, 2024.

Details to follow soon!

It’s that time of year again when Cantor’s Concert planning kicks into gear! Sarah Greenblatt and Karen Kimball are coordinating the 2024 Cantor's Concert Planning Committee which promises to be a most exciting and enjoyable musical evening on Saturday evening May 18, 2024!

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY!

If you have time to join the Cantor's Concert Planning Committee as a volunteer let us know by emailing Sarah Greenblatt. These are some of the areas for which volunteer assistance is welcomed: overall planning team for the event; design of invitation and registration materials; design of Concert flyer and poster; stuffing envelopes to support a timely mailing; seeking Concert sponsors; envisioning creative ways to raise meaningful additional funds the night of the event; planning the menu; buying the food and serving pieces; planning for and set-up of decorations; overall set-up and clean-up.

CMI EVENTS

Shabbat Schmooze Saturday, March 2 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.

Please join us Saturday afternoon for a Shabbat social for the entire CMI community! There will be a potluck oneg with plenty of space to schmooze and snack, tables set up with board games, a craft area, and, for little kids, a PJ Library Shabbat Storytime in the CMI library starting at 3:30.

Are you working on a craft? Bring it! You may make a friend with a similar hobby or meet someone who would like to learn from you. (We'll have craft materials to share too.) Love to play chess, Blokus, or another board game? Please bring it along! We'd love to play a round! But most importantly, bring yourself! We are so excited to spend a slice of Shabbat afternoon with you.

Want to bake or bring a snack to share? Use Sign Up Genius.

Note: This event is 100% lay-led, because CMI staff should get Shabbat rest too. If you are able to volunteer your help with setting up tables, cleaning up after, or welcoming people, please email abbyfriedman@gmail.com to sort out how you can contribute.

Special Congregational Meeting THIS Sunday, March 3 at 10:30 a.m.

Please join us in welcoming Rabbi Schaefer to CMI.  We hold a special congregational meeting to introduce Rabbi Daniel Schaefer to our community and to affirm the Board of Trustee's decisions to hire him as our next rabbi.

The meeting will be held in person and via live stream and will be followed by brunch. If you are unable to attend in person, please complete the online proxy form or download, print and mail in the printable proxy form to allow us to reach a quorum of at least 75 members. Please RSVP to the in person meeting so we will know how many will be in attendance.

If anyone is interested in attending this meeting in person, but needs a ride to the synagogue, please either call the office at 203-288-3877 or email Nancy Horowitz.

We would like to offer a special thank you to Jimmy Shure for sponsoring the brunch which will be catered by Emily's Catering Group.

Adar I is a month that's known for its connection to joy. Understandably, joy may feel hard to access right now; it’s cold, dark, and the news can feel grim. And yet, in Jewish tradition, it is literally a mitzvah — a sacred obligation — to cultivate joy during this time of the year. How can we fulfill the mitzvah to be joyous?

Join us for an evening of sharing and cultivating joy. We ask that participants bring a short poem, reading, or song that brings you joy. Light snacks that make you happy are also welcome.

We’ll spend our time together this month in the joyous sharing of words and music that bring us happiness and inspiration.

RSVP to Michele Abrams if you’d like to join us.

CMI IN ACTION

Civil Rights Journey Last month, CMI members joined Rabbi Ross and Confronting Racism for a Civil Rights Journey. The group met with those who worked with The Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. and visited sites including the Rosa Parks Museum, The National Memorial for Peace and Justice, and the Legacy Museum in Montgomery,  the National Civil Rights Monument and 16th Street Baptist Church in Birmingham, the King Center and Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta, and marched across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma.

IRIS RUN On February 11, over 3000 runners, walkers and observers gathered for the annual IRIS (Integrated Refugee and Immigrant Services) Run for Refugees. The event raises funds to aid refugees and immigrants directly. JCARR is an IRIS Community Co-Sponsor and over the years, a number of JCARR volunteers have participated in the run. This year, four members of our most recently settled families participated in the event while the rest of their families cheered them on.
