Reserving Friday Night Honors
It is a custom to invite congregants who are observing a yahrzeit, a milestone birthday or milestone anniversary to lead the blessings at Shabbat Services. The honors are to light the Shabbat candles at the beginning of the service or to recite the kiddush and motzi (prayers for the wine & bread) at the end of services. If you will be observing a milestone simcha or yahrzeit in the weeks ahead and would like to lead one of these blessings on the Friday night of that week, please contact Allan Hillman.

A Message From Rabbi Schaefer
How many Jews does it take to install a rabbi? I’ve been thinking a lot about old lightbulb jokes lately as we approach my installation as Rabbi of Mishkan Israel. They all play off the idea that it should only take one person to screw in a light bulb, so what are all the other people doing? You might think your presence is not needed on November 15th, since what would one more person add? And if I wasn’t already the rabbi of CMI, then who let me lead services over Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur?
But the term “installation,” doesn’t capture the essence of the service. An installation is really a covental moment and a simcha. Judaism is a covenantal religion, built on relationships between multiple parties. While the nature of the brit or sacred agreement is that it is long-lasting, a simcha is the joy that we can only experience in the moment. It can’t be captured and we aren’t meant to try. All we can do is live in the present and soak in as much joy and gratitude as possible.
Moses tells the Israelites: “It is not with you alone that I make this covenant and this oath, both with those who are standing here with us this day before our God and with those who are not with us here this day.” (Deut 29:13-14) On November 15th, I’ll be thinking of all the rabbis and members of CMI who are no longer with us and those who are yet to be born and yet to find us. And I hope you will be one of the people standing with us on that day, because each connection, each relationship, each person who is happy to see you walk into the room multiples the strength and joy in our community.
L’shalom,
Rabbi Daniel SChaefer
Since 2015, JCARR (Jewish Community Alliance for Refugee Resettlement), a partnership of five New Haven-area synagogues and the Jewish Federation of Greater New Haven, has welcomed nine families from various countries, including Angola, Syria, Iraq, the Democratic Republic of Congo, Afghanistan, and Ukraine. At times, partnering with families as they navigate their way to self-sufficiency seems daunting, but it makes their progress and successes sweeter and more meaningful.
We want to share a few of the milestones that some of the families recently achieved.
Ishmael, who arrived from Iraq as a senior citizen, recently became a US citizen after successfully passing the citizenship exam. Successful passage of the test confers full citizenship status. We are so proud of Ishmael.
JCARR
Nothing says, “I believe in the future,” like welcoming a new child into the family. Family 7 recently added another child to their family. We rejoice at the blessing of a healthy baby boy.
The father of family 9 recently started his first full-time job. He loved his first job as a crossing guard but sought full-time employment to better support his family. We are so proud of his persistence and success in the job search.
JCARR HONORED WITH GOLDEN DOOR LEADERSHIP AWARD
At a recent gathering of IRIS’s co-sponsors, IRIS (Integrated Refugee and Immigration Services) presented the first Golden Door Leadership Award to JCARR. JCARR’s selection as the first honoree recognizes that we were the first group to form a coalition (in response to the Syrian refugee crisis in 2015), and we were the first group to receive a family as a community co-sponsor. JCARR also has strong leadership, has worked in full partnership with IRIS through many crises over the last 9 years, and has always taken the approach of asking, “How can we help?”
Kol Hakavod and, thank you to all the wonderful volunteers who enable JCARR to do such outstanding work.
JCARR is currently assessing our readiness and ability to welcome a tenth family. The number of refugees continues to grow. Although the number of families JCARR can assist is small in comparison to the need, we remain sustained by our faith, which believes that saving one person is like saving the whole world; the strength and resilience of the families and the support we receive from CMI, the other congregations, and the Jewish Federation. If you want more information about this vital work, please contact Sue Millen or Lina Lawall.
Stained Glass Campaign
Reminder to make your Chai donations now!
Thanks to all of you who have already donated to this year's Chai Campaign! We are closing in on $100K towards our annual goal of $180,000 but need your help to reach our goal by the High Holy Days. The past couple of years have stretched Mishkan Israel financially and we will need to all step up and contribute generously to make sure we can flourish. We know we can--- but we need your help. Please make a gift today--- increments of Chai most welcome, but we also value participation at any level towards our goal of $180,000. In fact, if we could have 100% participation across the congregation it would be a huge help. Please give what you can!
Here are some things your gift makes possible:
· For our youngest members, Rabbi Schaefer is planning regular Tot Shabbats, and Shabbat Schmoozes and the Learning Tree offer many other ways for young families to connect.
· Religious school enrollment stands at 87 and Director Michelle Goldstein reports that enrollment continues to increase, with an unprecedented number of teen madrichim helpers.
· Our Rosh Chodesh group has created a space for women in the congregation to come together to celebrate together each month, and has created so much joy for those involved.
· From the Confronting Racism group, to Life is Delicious to the Pe’ah Garden, Chevra Hands, and Social Action Committee, our community continues to follow the path of Rabbi Goldburg and Rabbi Brockman in, fulfilling our congregational imperative to tikkun olam.
· Our Greeters and the Brotherhood of Men and women continue to make CMI a warm and welcoming place full of kindness in the air and food in our stomachs every Sunday morning.
· People attending CMI for the first time are in awe of our music--- our wonderful Cantor and music director and pianist Eric Trudell, and our many incredibly talented congregants.
· Our library is open with so many shelves of books for all ages, fiction and non-fiction, but Judaic in scope thanks to the hard work of so many dedicated volunteers.
· And we continue to honor our past, not only as our congregants join together as a community to celebrate Yahrzeit, but also through events like the tour of the Mishkan Israel cemetery, which tells stories of the generations of remarkable people who preceded us here at CMI.
Of course, the biggest news of all that we can all celebrate together is the return of Daniel Schaefer BACK to the childhood spiritual home as our new Rabbi. We hope that through your gift, you will join us in making his first year at CMI the tallest of successes. Thank you for your consideration and for BEING Congregation Mishkan Israel.
Welcome Back to our Stained Glass Donors
This week, we will be celebrating the many donors who stepped up to re-dedicate our beautiful stained glass windows. A special thanks to all of these wonderful people for making our sanctuary sparkle once again!

Our intergenerational group provides for female identifying and non-binary individuals thirteen and older a place to meet, form bonds, find meaningful ways to worship, and form community through discussion, song, poetry, storytelling, art, dance, and food.
Saturday, November 9, 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
With the start of the Jewish New Year, we are excited to announce that CMI’s Shabbat Schmooze will now be a monthly event! This is a relaxed environment where everyone can enjoy Shabbat in community with minimal barriers (no services, sermons, or sitting still required). Schmooze is for all ages and life stages, so whether your game of choice is Candy Land, Chess, or Bridge, or you are just hoping to chat, snack, and relax with community, we look forward to seeing you there! We ask you to please RSVP using our Google Doc. Please email Abby Friedmanwith any questions, if you would like to arrange a special activity, or to volunteer to help.

CMI Book Club Wednesday, November 13 at 12:00 p.m.
Join the CMI Book Club as Corey Stone facilitates a discussion about our next book choice, “Who Are the Jews and Who Can We Become" by Donniel Hartman. This book tackles perhaps the most urgent question facing the Jewish people today: Given unprecedented denominational tribalism, how can we Jews speak of ourselves in collective terms?
Crucially, the way each of us tells our “shared” story is putting our collective identity at risk, Donniel Hartman argues. We need a new story, built on Judaism’s foundations and poised to inspire a majority of Jews to listen, discuss, and retell it. This book is that story.

Confronting Racism Hosted a Very Successful Community Event: “New Haven’s Untold Stories: Enslavement and Beyond”
New Haven’s Untold Stories: Enslavement and Beyond
CMI, partnering with the Greater New Haven African American Historical Society (GNHAAHS), hosted a special community event on October 22. Conceived by the Confronting Racism Planning Group along with CMI member Diane Orson, “New Haven’s Untold Stories: Enslavement and Beyond” drew more than 120 people. Nearly half of the attendees were from the broader New Haven community.
Diane is a Special Correspondent with Connecticut Public and a Contributing Reporter to National Public Radio. The CMI event grew out of “Unforgotten: Connecticut’s Hidden History of Slavery,” a multi-media series that she co-produced and hosted for CT Public.
The evening began with an introduction by Frank Mitchell, a cultural organizer in visual arts and public humanities. Both he and panelist Joy Burns worked with Diane on the CT Public series. His introduction was followed by one of the most memorable parts of the program, when a four-person student ensemble from Music Haven performed works by Sawney Freeman. Mr. Freeman, a once-enslaved Connecticut musician, was one of America’s first published Black composers. The story of his life and musicianship are featured in the Unforgotten series. (Music Haven creates an inclusive community for young people to learn, play, and express themselves through tuition-free classical music lessons and ongoing mentoring with world class musicians.)
“Untold Stories” featured a panel of three public historians: Adrienne Joy Burns, Denise Keyes Page and Jill Marie Snyder. Both Denise and Jill were recommended by the GNHAAHS. Each one described her deep research into a singular story of resilience rooted in New Haven. They shared the untold, unknown and surprising stories they had unearthed. The story of Lucy and Lois Tritton, a mother and daughter who were sold on the New Haven Green in 1825 was especially riveting. Historians believe theirs was the final documented sale of enslaved people in New Haven.
Several CMI members and staff helped make the evening a success by doing the behind the scenes work leading up to the event and a group of CMI greeters gave warm welcomes to the those who attended.
“Untold Stories” left many people wanting more. The Confronting Racism planning group looks forward to continuing its collaboration with the GNHAAHS and to hosting more community events in the coming year.
NOVEMBER IS NATIONAL JEWISH BOOK MONTH
Jews became ‘the people of the books’ over the course of our history from the Torah to Talmud to the many Jewish texts today. It is no surprise that Jewish tradition holds texts in high regard. Adam Kirsh writes in his book, “The People and the Books”, that texts often become turning points in Jewish history. Kirsh cites Passover as an example where texts become a bridge between Jewish present and past linking modern Jews with the Israelites who escaped Egypt.
At Mishkan Israel, our diverse library provides a foundation for the study of our religion and heritage. It also contains texts that bridge the history of our synagogue from its formation to current day as well a wide range of texts that provide rich information for all ages about our holidays.
A recent example is the book Rabbi Schaefer selected with the help of our volunteer librarian, Martha Simpson. He selected the book “The Very Best Sukkah: A Story from Uganda” for the Sabbath services during Sukkot. The book from the CMI library shares the story of a Sukkot celebration in Uganda with the Aba yudaya Jewish community. The book can be found in the Sukkot book bin under the windows in the CMI library.
The CMI Library is open every day to CMI members. Come browse our selections. Volunteers are available to help visitors find resources in the library during Sunday Religious School.
