MESSAGE FROM RABBI SCHAEFER
It’s sad to say goodbye to summer, but I’m grateful for such a warm welcome to Mishkan Israel. It’s been wonderful to be invited into people’s homes and hear from so many people about their connection to CMI. As I get to know this special community, I’ve loved learning about what brought you here and what has kept you here. Whether you’ve been a member for four days, four years, or four generations, I’ve enjoyed hearing each individual story and how they weave together to form the tapestry of our community.
As the school year begins and Rosh Hashanah approaches, it is now my pleasure to return the favor and help welcome our community back for Shabbat, religious school and the High Holy Days. We’re excited to kick off this season with our Welcome Back Shabbat & BBQ where we welcome members, prospective members, and the broader community to join us for a musical Shabbat and relaxing dinner.
This is the season of encounter. During Elul, the Hebrew month leading up to Rosh Hashanah, which begins September 4, it is said, “the king is in the field”. During this month, The Divine Presence comes closer to us as we enter the season of return. This is a time to return - to community, to relationships, and to our spiritual work in this world. I look forward to all the moments of encounter this month, as we greet each other anew and welcome a new season together.
L’Shalom,
Rabbi Schaefer
MESSAGE FROM CANTOR GIGLIO
September has ushered in an age of anxiety, trepidation but above all, Hope. We have arrived at a threshold of change on so many levels but without a doubt, a beacon of Hope shines upon us. I am so excited to be sharing the bimah with our new Rabbi, Daniel Schaefer and I know you will be too. Join us for our Welcome Back Shabbat on Friday, September 6 as we welcome and celebrate the start of the season and our new spiritual leader. On a technical note, this service will be inside the main sanctuary this year. We cannot broadcast on livestream if the service is outside and we have many members who, for personal reasons, cannot join us in person and need to worship from home. We do not want to deny them this wonderful service and our new Rabbi. I hope that the stars will be shining brightly and we can all walk out onto the patio during the evening and take in the view along with the awe of Shabbat!
On September 3, 2024/5785, we enter the month of Elul. It is a time of self-reflection and soul searching in anticipation of the High Holy Days. Saturday evening on the weekend before Rosh Hashanah is Selichot, a service of penitential prayers and poems. Selichot prepares us for the awe and majesty of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur. Each year, one of the area URJ Reform Congregations hosts a Community Selichot Service. This year it will be held at Temple Beth David in Cheshire on Saturday, September 28 at 7:00 p.m. Our community of Reform synagogues will be studying, praying and lifting our voices together. It is the perfect inspiration and warmup for the High Holy Days and not to be missed! Join us in Cheshire and see why it is one of your Cantor’s favorite services!
L’Shalom,
Cantor G.
Please note that the Building, Office & The Learning Tree will be closed on Monday, September 2 for Labor Day.
CMI EVENTS
Tuesday, September 3 at 9:00 a.m.
Emergency Blood and Platelet Shortage
The Red Cross national blood product supply has fallen by more than 25% since July 1. The Red Cross is working with hospitals around the clock to meet the blood needs of patients – but can’t do it alone. We need donors, like you, to help provide this lifesaving care.
The American Red Cross will return to CMI for another blood drive. Each donation can save up to three lives. Please register and enter "Mishkan" to give blood or call 1-800-RED CROSS (1-800-733-2767) to schedule an appointment.
Rosh Chodesh - Elul Wednesday, September 4 at 7:00 p.m.
Rosh Chodesh is the monthly holiday that celebrates the arrival of the new moon, marking the start of a new month in the Jewish calendar. Traditionally, it has become a special holiday for women. Our intergenerational group provides for female identifying and non-binary individuals thirteen and older a place to meet, form bonds, find meaningful ways to worship and form community through discussion, song, poetry, storytelling, art, dance, and food.
Our focus this month will be on preparing ourselves spiritually for the High Holidays. Come join us as we make time for reflection and begin to prepare for the 10 days of awe. We welcome newcomers and ask only that you RSVP for security purposes.
Contact Michele Abrams at shalomyall.824@gmail.com with questions or to RSVP.
CMI Book Group Wednesday, September 11 at 12:00 p.m.
We will discuss the book, Judas by Amos Oz, an international bestseller and winner of the International Literature Prize. At once an exquisite love story and a coming-of-age novel, an allegory for the state of Israel and for the biblical tale from which it draws its title, Judas is one of Amos Oz’s most powerful novels. Please plan to bring your own lunch. CMI will provide coffee and tea.
Please join us for the return of CMI’s Shabbat Schmooze! We hope everyone has had a refreshing summer and we look forward to catching up!
For those new to this event, Shabbat Schmooze is a multigenerational Shabbat social for the entire CMI community. There will be a potluck oneg with space to schmooze and snack, as well as tables set up with board games and crafts. We hope you will come and celebrate Shabbat in this unique and special way!
Since Shabbat Schmooze is a lay-led event, please email Abby Friedman directly if you have any questions or if you would like to volunteer to help with setup or cleanup. Please be sure to RSVP to this event.
Shabbat Schmooze Saturday, September 14 from 3:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
1st Day of Religious School Sunday, September 15 from 9:30 a.m. - 12:00 a.m.
Welcome Back! We hope everyone had a wonderful summer and now we are excited to see students and parents back in the building ready for another year of learning. Be sure to join us for a fun filled first day back!
The Reform Jewish Movement is collaborating with the Center for Common Ground's Reclaim Our Vote (ROV) Campaign to engage under-represented voters through post carding efforts in key states. The CMI Social Action Committee is joining this effort by organizing postcard writing sessions at the synagogue in September.
Our Jewish tradition is clear: "A ruler is not to be appointed unless the community is first consulted" (Babylonian Talmud Berachot 55a). We believe our democracy is strongest when every voice is heard and every vote is counted. Join our nonpartisan campaign to ensure all have an equal say in decisions that affect their lives by sending out postcards to voters across the nation.
We will supply the postcards, the written message and addresses. To cover the cost of postage, we encourage participants to contribute $5.00 towards stamps.
JOIN THE POST CARD WRITING INITIATIVE AT CMI
TO REACH UNDER-REPRESENTED VOTERS Thursday, September 19 at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, September 22 at 10:00 a.m.

CMI LIBRARY NEWS
A Special Donation
The CMI Library was very fortunate this summer to receive a donation of over 130 books from Martha Simpson. Martha is a volunteer in the library and a retired children’s librarian in a town library. She also serves on the Sydney Taylor Book Award committee. All the books donated were nominated for the award.
The CMI Library accepts donations of books in good condition that contain Jewish content and/or are written by Jewish authors.

Selected books, both fiction and non-fiction, on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are on display in the library and are available for loan. Books range from picture books to adult non-fiction books. A few examples of books on display are listed below:

CMI Library Operations
All CMI members are automatically patrons of the CMI Library. Volunteers are available Sundays during religious school hours and other times by appointment to assist members in the use of the library. You will receive your CMI library patron number during your first visit as well as instruction in how to use the library’s circulation computer to find and check out books. After that, CMI members can visit the library anytime the building is open. Beginning Thursday, September 12th, a CMI member with a patron ID will be able to access the library database from anywhere with internet access. Books can be reserved and picked up at your convenience. For more information or to make an appointment, please email CMILibrary@cmihamden.org.
