CELEBRATING OUR COMMUNITY
FEBRUARY
We are a community where members find inspiration, solace, and friendship. In recognition of the beauty of our diverse community, CMI welcomes interfaith families and people of any race, ethnicity, religious background, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, and ability level.
Our historic congregation has been committed to social action since its inception in 1840. We prepare meals for the hungry, help resettle refugee families looking for freedom and safety, work to promote racial justice, and grow more than one ton of vegetables each summer in our Pe’ah garden for area soup kitchens.
Below are photos that celebrate our community coming together to celebrate, learn and be a part of the many groups that gather to make a difference for both CMI and the Greater New Haven area.

A Message From Rabbi Schaefer
Renewing Our Call to Justice
This month I am traveling to Washington DC with our Religious School Director, Michelle Goldstein and seven of our teens from CMI. We are spending four days engaging in advocacy and action with teens from across North America through the Reform Action Center’s (RAC) L’taken Social Justice Seminar.
Reform Jews and the RAC itself, have played a significant role in shaping a more just and equitable country for all people. Jewish, African-American, and other civil rights leaders gathered in the RAC’s conference room to draft the landmark 1964 Civil Rights Act and 1965 Voting Rights Act.
At a time when the moral arc of the universe seems to be bending away from a more just world, we renew our commitment to a nation and world dedicated to freedom and equality for all by equipping the next generation of Reform Jewish leaders with the skills and knowledge they will need.
The Greek poet, Dinos Christianopoulos wrote, “They tried to bury us, but they didn't know we were seeds.” As Tu Bishvat, the Jewish New Year for the trees approaches, let us work to plant seeds of justice for this moment and for generations to come.
L’shalom,
Rabbi Daniel Schaefer
CMI MEMBERSHIP
Perspectives on CMI Membership
Sarah B. Greenblatt, Membership Chair
Last summer I was asked to take a leadership role in reconstituting the CMI Membership Committee - a group that was active prior to COVID but has not been reunited since then. My charge was to expand our membership and support those who join! Yet, as I began, I thought it was important to explore with staff and congregants what we are already doing to promote membership enhancements and what we could do more of and/or better. At the same time, it was important to support our dedicated administrative staff, Tamara Epstein and Sarah Legassey, as we engaged and supported prospective, new and current members throughout the High Holy Days and within day-to-day operations. These hands-on experiences have provided a deeper understanding of what a reconstituted Membership Committee could be. Additionally, I am working with Board Vice Presidents Julie Chevan and Madeline Ravich as well as Board member Nancy Moss-Racusin - and of course, Rabbi Schaefer to gain an understanding of our vision for enhancing our membership practices. Together we know that everything we do at CMI and how we do it impacts membership development, engagement and support.
CMI has been in Hamden since 1960 and began close to 185 years ago in New Haven. We are the largest Jewish congregation of any denomination in the Greater New Haven area, with 413 families and individuals, and 36 new member family units that have joined us over the past 18 months. We are a congregation that is 15% children and youth under age 20; 20% ages 20-39; 25% ages 40-59; 29% ages 60-79; and 10% older than 80 years of age. As we are learning more about who we are, we are also looking to better understand trends in members who leave CMI.
Prospective, new and current members often ask about how to get involved in all that CMI has to offer. There are so many ways of becoming a learner and/or a doer to enhance your life in the CMI family and to enhance the life of our CMI family. Maybe you would like to be a greeter to welcome members and guests on Shabbat, Holidays or other special services - and make new friends while you are at it. Truth be told, being a greeter is how I began my journey at CMI when I joined in 2011. Before I knew it, I had made new friends and felt a real sense of belonging. In addition, within a Jewish minute, I was also asked to join the Board and then asked to become President in 2018. Maybe that could be YOU as well!
Maybe you would like to teach others - young and old - how to make Challah for Shabbat or the HHDs, how to bake cookies for special onegs, or even prepare appetizers for Shabbat pre-service onegs. You can join the book group or Saturday morning Torah Study to learn with others about Jewish history and present day living, or you can find a hiking group to explore area parks, or engage in Israeli dancing. Maybe you have musical skills and can sing or play an instrument on Shabbat with our Rabbi and Cantor! Of course, you can join one of our many committees or interest groups - or start an interest group as well! Or maybe you have organizational development interests, writing or proof-reading abilities, website enhancement skills, time to help plan onegs or special events, or finance and budgeting expertise, historic building interests and facilities management talents, fundraising energy and experiences, or any number of specialties that you want to share that bring you joy and can benefit CMI … become a mitzvah maker!!!
Our evolving CMI volunteer culture needs YOU to share your time, talents, interests - and of course your donations to support CMI! From generation to generation, while we have provided spiritual connections and critical social justice leadership, we have also provided personally meaningful opportunities for members of all ages to give back to CMI! I would love to hear from you if you have membership-related interests, questions and ideas for how together we can grow our spectacular Reform Jewish congregation!
Please feel free to reach out to me at sarahbgreenblatt@gmail.com.
L’Shalom,
Sarah
CMI RITUAL COMMITTEE
CMI Cooks: The Ritual Committee will be preparing and serving dinner in the CMI social hall on Friday, February 21 at 6:00 p.m. immediately after Tot Shabbat and before the Family Service. The event is open to CMI families with a suggested donation of $18 per family. We are recruiting CMI members who can work on prep earlier in the week and/or are available that Friday to cook, serve, and clean up. Please reach out to Corey Stone if you are interested in supporting this dinner or future ones like this. Experienced hands from Life is Delicious will be providing us with tips on using our congregational kitchen. Please sign up in advance.
Shabbat Across CMI: The Committee is exploring whether CMI should participate in Shabbat Across America. Congregations organize Shabbat dinners in members’ homes, exploring and promoting this family ritual practice in this national program. This will likely be in May and follow a regular 6:00 p.m. service. If you think you might want to host a potluck Shabbat dinner for another CMI family (or prospective CMI family) on a Friday night, or if you are interested in being hosted at another family's home, please fill out our response form. Once we have confirmed the level of interest, we will be back in touch with you.
Purim Brews and Schmooze: Back by popular demand, the Ritual Committee will be organizing another Brews and Schmooze for members 21 and over at a local brewery following the Purim spiel scheduled for Friday, March 14. Watch the e-news and CMI website for details.
The Ritual Committee's current members include Jeremy Schwartz and Corey Stone, Co-Chairs, Julie and David Chevan, Michele Abrams, Jonathan Zabin, Stan Friedman, Patricia Vener Saavedra, Michael Dimenstein and Hedda Rubenstein, Dana Brozinsky, Cynthia and Dana Astmann, and Allan Hillman. The Committee meets on the 3rd Thursday of each month from 7:00 p.m.- 8:00 p.m. If you are interested in learning more and/or joining the Committee, we would love to have you join us! Please email Corey or Jeremy.
THE LEARNING TREE EARLY CHILDHOOD CENTER
The Learning Tree; which just celebrated its first year under the new name, continues to grow with new children joining every month. Word of mouth has been our best form of advertisement as families love the warmth and smiles they receive from children and teachers. Please share our website link and information with your friends and family and invite them to follow us on social media. See for yourself and follow our Facebook page and our Instagram. There you will see all of the exciting things we have happening downstairs!
As we look ahead into the fall, we have a few spots remaining in our preschool program and would love to have some new friends join us. We have time available for tours, so if you have not visited us yet, please schedule a time to do so. Give us a call at 203-288-2375!
MISHLOACH MANOT - PURIM GIFT BASKETS
We have an exciting new opportunity for you to be able to send special Purim goodies to family and friends! CMI is collaborating with Sweet Seidner’s Bake Shop, a kosher bakery in Hamden, CT to provide several delicious baked treat options. An added benefit is that CMI will receive a portion of all sales back as a donation from Seidner’s. This is a great time to send your college student a special treat, to cheer up a friend who may need a smile or just reach across the miles (or nearby) to say hello to a friend or relative. Please visit our special Seidner’s web page to place an order. Happy Purim!
***DEADLINE FOR ORDERING IS MONDAY MARCH 3rd***
*Shipping will begin on Wednesday, March 5th*
2024-2025 Chai Holy Day Campaign
Thank you to everyone who has already donated to this year's Chai Campaign! We are getting closer to our annual goal of $180,000, but we need all of our congregants to help reach that goal. The past couple of years have stretched Mishkan Israel financially and we hope that you will contribute as generously as you are able to make sure we can flourish.
Please make a gift today -- increments of Chai are welcome, but we also value participation in ANY amount. Please give what you can!
Below are gifts that we have received at the time of press.

Judaism: New Interpretations of Old Ideas Sunday, February 2 at 11:00 a.m.
Rabbi Steinberg leads this special adult education offering. Jewish history is often taught as an unremitting history of suffering. That is not accurate. It is rather a complex interweaving of good times and bad times. Join us to discuss why Roman Jews cheered the destruction of the Temple, how Islam saved Judaism, why half of the Jews rejected the Talmud, why medieval towns sought Jewish settlement and who was the Jewish Trump in the 17th century? In addition, why the first historian to write a Jewish history was a French Catholic, why Herzl was not interested in the Dreyfus trial, why steamship lines opened offices to entice Jews to leave Lithuania and come to America. If any of these questions or ideas this interests you, please join us. No RSVP needed - we hope to see you there.
Shabbat Schmooze
Saturday, February 8, at 3:00 p.m.
Join us for a multigenerational Shabbat social with a potluck oneg, board games, craft supplies, and plenty of space to schmooze.
