A Message From Rabbi Schaefer
This January, we begin reading the book of Exodus, which details the founding narrative of the Jewish people. In Egypt, Jacob and his family grow into an am or people. Despite the oppression and suffering brought on by servitude to Pharaoh, the Israelites grow strong and numerous. Eventually, with the help of the Holy One, Moses, and Aaron, they break the bonds of slavery and march their way to freedom.
We are commanded 36 times in the Torah to remember that we were slaves or strangers in Egypt. It shapes our self-identity as Jews and how we see our purpose in the world each and every day. As we lift up that memory, we also celebrate how the Exodus has inspired people of many faiths to pursue freedom.
This year, we join together with local communities and clergy at our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Interfaith Service on January 24th to renew that call for freedom. By uniting with our friends of all faiths, we remember our freedom is bound up with our neighbors. In the words of Dr. King, on this path of freedom, “We cannot walk alone. And as we walk, we must make the pledge that we shall always march ahead. We cannot turn back.” As we begin in a new year, let us keep moving forward and work to grow stronger and more numerous.
Happy New Year,
Rabbi Daniel Schaefer
A Message From Cantor Giglio
Cantor G. has some exciting events that need a shout out, so here we go! The MLK Interfaith Service is going to be on Friday, January 24, 2025. Please carefully note the date as it is a week after the actual MLK weekend. This service is always moving and inspiring. It brings our community together every year and if there was ever a year that we need to come together, it is 2025. In the face of the hostages in Gaza, the recent election and the terrible rise of antisemitism, we need community more than any other time in recent history. Be there to show your support and be part of the solution.
Sadly, as you may well know, I am retiring as of June 30, 2025. My CMI family has been wonderful to me and I will miss each and every one of you. Yet, do not be too sad as I still have a Big Cantor’s Concert Fundraiser that you must attend! It will be on Sunday Afternoon, March 30, 2025. It will be a concert for all, young and old. Families are especially encouraged to attend as I have very special performers indeed! Two of my most favorite Jewish Choirs will be filling our halls with music. They are the Zamir Chorale and Zamir Noded, both under the direction of the wonderful Matthew Lazar. Who are they, you may ask? Here is a little taste:
Matthew Lazar is the prime force of the Jewish choral movement in North America. His visionary leadership in service of the Jewish community led to the creation of the Zamir Choral Foundation, which continues to nurture the growth of Jewish choral singing in North America and Israel. Mati, as we all affectionately call him, is one of the foremost conductors and interpreter of Jewish and Israeli music. His concerts have educated audiences across North America to the beauty and Joy of Jewish Choral Music. Mati is bringing to CMI the following very special Jewish Choirs:
The Zamir Chorale. A truly leading voice of the Jewish choral movement in North America. Under the tutelage of Maestro Lazar, the Zamir Chorale has thrilled tens of thousands of audience members across the United States and Israel. The Zamir Chorale appears regularly throughout the Tri-State region.
Zamir Noded the next choir, was established for young adults in their 20s and 30s to have a Jewish choir of their own that shows off their special talents. They are truly an inspiration to their generation and to all. Zamir Noded was established in September 2013, they have since won standing ovations at its performances throughout the New York Metropolitan area and at the annual North American Jewish Choral Festival which I have participated in for many years. My own daughter Lina is a past member of Zamir Noded and will be joining me! I too will be singing alongside both choirs and I cannot wait. If you would like a taste of what they are like you can find them by doing a simple search in YouTube by name.
This is our biggest fundraiser of the year for CMI and my last big concert. Those are just two extremely good reasons that you should put this on your calendar right away. Be there and share the joy with me!
A Message From Alan Sturtz, CMI President
As I wished you all a healthy and happy 5785 at Rosh Hashanah, I wish you the same as we ring in 2025 next month. We have many exciting events, secular and spiritual, on the horizon so I urge you to continue to be a presence at CMI. We are always looking for volunteers to serve on our many committees and to help plan events.
Therefore, a reprise of the 5785 resolutions:
No one will ever get out of this world alive; resolve therefore in the year to come to maintain a sense of values.
Take care of yourself. Good health is everyone's major source of wealth. Without it, happiness is almost impossible.
Resolve to be cheerful and helpful. People will repay you in kind.
Avoid angry, abrasive persons. They are generally vengeful.
Avoid zealots. They are generally humorless.
Resolve to listen more and talk less. No one ever learns anything by talking.
Be wary of giving advice. Wise people do not need it, and fools will not heed it.
Resolve to be tender with the young, compassionate with the aged, sympathetic with the striving, and tolerant of the weak and the wrong.
Sometime in your life you will have been all of these.
Do not equate money with success. There are many successful money-makers who are miserable failures as human beings. What counts most about success is how a person achieves it.
Resolve to love next year someone you didn't love this year.
Love is the most enriching ingredient of life.
[Walter Scott,1973]
CONFRONTING RACISM
With steady support and guidance from CMI Clergy and congregation Presidents, the CMI Confronting Racism program is currently in its 5th year. Led by the Planning Group, Karen Baar, Nancy Moss Racusin, Beth Stenger, and Nancy Yedlin, the program’s aim is both to increase participants’ recognition of the pervasiveness of systemic racism in our society and to equip CMI members with the confidence and skills necessary to help combat racism as they witness it. Over the past 5 years, we have studied and discussed a wide range of topics such as housing, education and other societal policies and outcomes, interpersonal relationships, and racial diversity among Jewish people; we have observed anniversaries of historic events, e.g. Juneteenth; and we have welcomed experts in a variety of fields.
Since the Confronting Racism program’s inception, we have conducted more than 30 sessions both on zoom and in person. Most months, the group meets on zoom to explore these ideas and topics with 25-35 CMI members participating. In addition, the Confronting Racism program planners organize events that bring together interested individuals from our synagogue and the Greater New Haven community. This past October we sponsored a community event which welcomed more than 120 attendees to a panel discussion and musical performance at CMI on New Haven’s Untold Stories: Enslavement and Beyond (see the CMI November Bulletin for a story about that event).
Most currently, the Confronting Racism Series just completed a two-session examination of systemic racism in healthcare and medical education, as well as ongoing initiatives dedicated to dismantling these racist practices. Looking ahead to 2025, we plan to extend our multi-faceted efforts to continue learning and - in response to participant requests - to identify ways in which CMI individuals can engage in meaningful action. To further these efforts, we plan to engage more vigorously with other organizations both within the Jewish community and the broader New Haven/Connecticut area. We also plan to explore more deeply the personal and professional settings in which CMI members may already be working to combat racism.
All activities are well-publicized. Please join us - we welcome new participants, ideas, suggestions, and questions.
Development Committee
Make your Chanukah gift to CMI today!
Don't let the lights go out! The holidays are coming so please make your year-end Chanukah donation to Congregation Mishkan Israel today. Thanks to all of you who have contributed to the Chai campaign, we are within $10K of our goal of $180K. If you haven't yet made your gift this year, please consider making one before year-end to help us meet our goal. Our dream is 100% participation from the congregation so please give what is personally meaningful to you.
Wishing you a Happy Chanukah from the Development Committee.
Support Our CMI Teens and Religious School Students
As we enter the holidays, we are looking for congregants to sponsor our Madrichim. The Madrichim (teacher assisitant) Program is very important because it provides our teens with an opportunity to be leaders in our religious school, to help guide and instruct younger students and assist the classroom teachers. Last year, we made the decision to move away from a volunteer model and pay our Madrichim for their valuable time. Our Madrichim provide critical support in our religious school and we are asking you to sponsor a Madrichim for $1000.
CMI Receives Grant from Partners for Sacred Places
The Board of Trustees of Congregation Mishkan Israel is thrilled to share some exciting news about our Raise the Roof campaign. As many of you are aware, the time has come to replace the roof of our extraordinary mid-century model jewel box of a building and we are embarking on a campaign to raise funds to restore it to its former glory. To this end, we are thrilled to announce that we have received a $200K preservation grant from the Fund for Sacred Places toward the restoration of the roof. This matching grant, funded by the Lilly Foundation supports historically and architecturally significant places of worship and in its 30-year history has only funded a small number of synagogues. Visit our website to learn more about this important grant and the Mishkanopoly Raise the Roof campaign designed by our teens.
2024-2025 Chai Holy Day Campaign
Thank you to everyone who has already donated to this year's Chai Campaign! We are getting closer to our annual goal of $180,000, but we need all of our congregants to help reach that goal. The past couple of years have stretched Mishkan Israel financially and we hope that you will contribute as generously as you are able to make sure we can flourish.
Please make a gift today -- increments of Chai are welcome, but we also value participation in ANY amount. Please give what you can!
Below are gifts that we have received at the time of press.

Judaica: Telling our stories through Ritual Objects
Bring an object that connects you to your Jewishness - a piece of jewelry, candlesticks, a book, matzoh cover, prayer shawl, artwork, recipe, whatever! The ideas are limitless. It can be handmade or handed down, elegant or humble, religious, cultural, or culinary.
Bring the actual object or a photo if the object is not portable. Be ready to share the story of why it means so much to you.
We will do a little bit of writing, plenty of talking, and lots of listening as we celebrate the "things" that help us connect our Jewish identity. Bring a small notebook, if you have one.
Please RSVP to Michele if you plan to attend.
CMI Book Club Wednesday, January 8 at 12:00 p.m. In the lounge
Please join us to discuss “Goyhood”, a new novel by Reuven Fenton. “A brilliant debut about a devoutly Orthodox Jewish man who discovers in middle age that he's not, in fact, Jewish, and embarks on a remarkable road trip to come to grips with his fate; it's Chaim Potok's The Chosen meets Planes, Trains and Automobiles.” During these cold winter days, it will be uplifting to read something amusing and sympathetic. If you have difficulty locating the book, there are 2 copies in the CMI library to borrow and the Hamden Public Library has ordered a book as well.
Join us as we celebrate Shabbat together! We will begin the evening with a lovely Shabbat pizza dinner followed by our Family Shabbat Service with the 5th & 6th Grades participating. The Junior Choir will be there as well! Please RSVP so we can provide enough pizza for all to enjoy!

New Expressive Writing Opportunity
All adult CMI members with an interest in self-expression through creative writing are invited to participate in our upcoming Expressive Writing Workshop. The sessions will be led by CMI congregant, Amy J. Barry, an award-winning columnist, published poet, children’s book author, and certified expressive arts facilitator, who has been leading writing workshops on the Connecticut shoreline for over 12 years. Amy will employ imaginative prompts and exercises that engage participants in the joy of writing intuitively starting from the heart, not the head. The emphasis will be on writing poetry and short fiction in a supportive group setting. No previous writing experience is necessary.
Sessions will be held in person at CMI from 1 to 2:30 pm. on the following Wednesdays:
January 15 February 19 March 19 April 16
