High Holiday Drivers
Help your fellow congregants who are unable to drive to CMI for services by volunteering to pick them up on your way. Please contact the office at 203-288-3877 if you are interested in volunteering. Anyone looking for a ride to any of the High Holiday services should call the office so that we can make arrangements.
Livestreaming in the Lounge
We will be livestreaming the High Holy Day services in the lounge in order for parents with restless infants and toddlers to have a place to entertain their children without missing the spiritual connection. CMI will provide limited snacks, drinks and toys.
Parking Safety
This year there will only be traffic cones set up to designate 2 rows of handicapped parking spaces. Please do not park in those spaces unless you have a handicap tag or you are severely inhibited from parking further away. Please drive very slowly and be mindful of pedestrians and other cars in the parking lot.

MESSAGE FROM RABBI SCHAEFER
On Yom Kippur we separate ourselves from the routine of our daily lives, including eating, drinking, and going to work. This separation enables us to realize that we are not our work or our possessions and that we should not give over the power of our happiness to our jobs, relationships, or anything that is outside our control. Instead, our identity and sense of self-worth should be rooted in our character, the way we treat others, and create a better world.
The spiritual work of the High Holy Days helps us head into the fall with the feeling of a clean slate and ready to experience joy and gratitude. Sukkot is known as zman simchateinu, the time of our rejoicing. It reminds us to enjoy what we have in the present, since so much in life is impermanent. I hope that you can find a moment this month to pause and reflect on what you are grateful for this year. Feeling gratitude not only helps us feel better, but reminds us to share our blessings with friends, family, and community through acts of kindness, and generosity.
As I’ve said before and will say again, if you celebrate Yom Kippur, then you should definitely celebrate Sukkot and Simchat Torah. Confession, atonement, and fasting are helpful spiritual practices, but so are eating, singing, and dancing. So please join us as we celebrate the end of Sukkot and a new cycle of Torah on Tuesday, October 14th.
G’mar chatimah tovah - May we all be inscribed for a good year in the Book of Life.

Chevra Hands (Quilting group) Sunday, October 5 at 10:00 a.m.
Join a group of fun-loving congregants who enjoy each other’s company each month as we create together. Chevra Hands lovingly makes baby quilts and lap blankets that are given to members with new babies or to those in need of comfort. We meet just once a month and no prior skills are necessary. Jewish history is often taught as an unremitting history of suffering. That is not accurate. It is rather a complex interweaving of good times and bad times. Discussion topics include: Why Roman Jews cheered the destruction of the Temple, how Islam saved Judaism, why half of the Jews rejected the Talmud, why medieval towns sought Jewish settlement, who was the Jewish Trump in the 17th century, why the first historian to write a Jewish history was a French Catholic, why Herzl was not interested in the Dreyfus trial, why steamship lines opened offices to entice Jews to leave Lithuania and come to America. Postcards to Voters With the Center for Common Ground Reclaim our Vote Campaign Thursday, October 9 at 7:00 p.m. Sunday, October 12 at 10:00 a.m.
Join us at CMI to write postcards to Get Out The Vote! You can come to one session or both. Reclaim Our Vote campaigns are non-partisan campaigns that focus on getting out the vote in states or districts with large numbers of Black voters for important statewide and federal races. Our goal is to mobilize voters to make their voices heard in elections.
We will supply postcards, pens, colored pencils, the script, addresses and other writing essentials. Join fellow congregants in this important effort to preserve our democracy.
Shabbat Schmooze Saturday, October 11 at 3:00 p.m.
CMI’s Shabbat Schmooze is back! Join us on the second Saturday of each month for a potluck oneg with games, arts & crafts, and of course plenty of space to schmooze. This event is for all ages and life stages. So, whether your game of choice is Candy Land or Mahjong, we hope to see you there! For security purposes, please RSVP.

CMI Book Club & the Brotherhood of Men & Women Special Guest Author Event Sunday, October 19 at 10:00 a.m.
The CMI Book Club and the Brotherhood of Men and Women are pleased to announce the visit of Reuven Fenton, author of "Goyhood". Reuven Fenton has been covering breaking news for the New York Post since 2007 and earned national recognition for his exclusive reporting on a myriad of national stories. He is a graduate of Yeshiva University and Columbia University School of Journalism. "Goyhood" is his debut novel.
Critics describe "Goyhood" as a cross between Chaim Potok’s "The Chosen" and the film, "Planes, Trains and Automobiles". The book tells the story of Mayer, a devout yeshiva student, married to the daughter of an esteemed Jewish scholar. His twin brother David is a secular ne’er-do-well entrepreneur. The brothers are estranged until their mother’s death and their discovery that they are not, in fact, Jewish. They then head out on a road trip peppered with unexpected companions and zany experiences.
While Fenton describes his own religious observance as Modern Orthodox—with some Hasidic influence—he identifies with both the pious Mayer and the worldly David. He thinks many readers will as well.
Rosh Chodesh - Cheshvan

Rosh Chodesh - Hebrew for “head of the month” – is the monthly holiday that celebrates the arrival of the new moon. Our intergenerational group provides for all female identifying and non-binary individuals thirteen and older, a place to meet, form bonds, find meaningful ways to worship, and contribute to our community.
Rhea Hirschman will be leading us in: Making Waves: Jewish women and the feminist movement. “Given that Jews are only about three percent of the U.S. population, Jewish women have been disproportionately represented among the pioneers of American feminism. In this session, we’ll look at some history, discuss how feminism and Judaism inform each other, and consider factors that led so many Jewish women to be agents of change.”
