MESSAGE FROM RABBI SCHAEFER
It’s been a busy summer at Mishkan Israel. Throughout August, our Open Houses for Tots, Young Families, and people of all ages brought new people to our synagogue and into our community. It has been a blessing to make new connections and grow CMI, but I’m excited to turn the page, because Fall is my favorite season in New England. The familiar chill in the morning air, leaves changing color, and the opportunity to begin again with a new Jewish year.
Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are known as Yamim Noraim - The Days of Awe. However, depending on the context, the same Hebrew word for awe (yirah) can also be translated as fear. That feels particularly resonant this year as I know that these are fearful days for so many within and beyond our community. It is imperative that we learn to transcend that fear and find the courage to take action.
That’s what awe and these Days of Awe help us do. By dwelling in our majestic sanctuary, listening to melodies that touch our heart, or reconnecting with friends and family, we gather hope and inspiration. My prayer for us is that this High Holy Day season provides the inspiration we need to make changes in our own life, the local community, or the broader world and that 5786 brings a sense of ease, comfort, and safety for all.

MESSAGE FROM CANTOR SIERRA FOX
As we continue our journey through the month of Elul, I find myself trying to root myself in rituals, old and new. I’m making sure to hear the sound of the shofar every day, participate in study sessions with friends and family, and take part in grounding practices each night. This month of preparation feels especially significant, as my own preparations for my first High Holidays in this community come together: musically, communally, liturgically, and thematically.
Many of you may know that the letters that spell out the name “Elul” can be taken as an acronym for the phrase “Ani l’dodi, v’dodi li,” “I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine,” from Song of Songs 6:3. There are endless ways to interpret this in the context of the month, but one that resonates with me is one from chassidic tradition: that the order of the phrase (“I am my beloved’s” before “my beloved is mine”) suggests that we must accept responsibility in the relationship with our beloved.
The chassidic interpretation would argue that our “beloved” is the Divine, that we are in a period of increased closeness to God, and can develop that relationship. For some, this may be precisely the purpose of the month, but for others, language around God can be uncomfortable, unclear, or even meaningless. Perhaps the purpose of this month can be to determine what, for you, is beloved? To what do you want and need to devote yourselves to, and by what do you seek to be enveloped? For me, entering this role at Mishkan Israel as your cantor, my “beloved” is this community. I am yours, and, to whatever extent is comfortable for each of you, you are mine, as a community, and as individuals. And, in my experience so far, this community is similarly beloved by all who choose to be a part of it.
As I participate in the practice of hearing the sound of the shofar every day, I allow myself to wonder: what do I need to hear today? Who do I need to reach out to? What seeds do I need to plant, what action do I need to take, to build a world in which I can be a support to my beloved, and that my beloved can be a support to me? How can we build closeness as we approach the Holidays, that is sustainable well beyond them? What, and who, are beloved by us, and by whom are we beloved?
In these weeks of continued preparation, and in all the time ahead, I hope that you feel the gratitude and love that I have for this community, just as I have felt it from so many of you. May we all heed the call of the shofar to build a world of closeness, connectedness, and love, for ourselves and for all. Ken y’hi ratzon: may it be so.

MESSAGE FROM ALAN STURTZ, PRESIDENT
Our year 5785 is drawing to an end and, on September 23, our new year, 5786, will begin. Mishkan Israel is also celebrating 185 years as our spiritual home and 65 years in this building. Rabbi Schaefer begins his second year with us; and I hope you will come to CMI often to meet and hear our new cantor, Sierra Fox. When you are in the building, stop in the office and meet our new Executive Director, Jody Dietch.
Suffice it to say that with the rise in antisemitism, we are confronting difficult societal problems in the greater New Haven Area, in our country, in Israel, and around the world. CMI is not only our spiritual home but also a sanctuary against hate and injustice. We need to support our Rabbi and Cantor in their efforts to provide both religious and secular programming and pastoral care for all generations of members.
As I mention at Shabbat services, it is time to plant the seeds of Tikkun Olam---peace, justice, community action, friendship, and hope. I also mention that with the increasing negativity, obfuscating unsubstantiated pronouncements from our government, and disregard for the rule of law, democratic values, and human rights we face every day, it is essential to focus on how we can continue to be a presence and a positive force in our world. Inclusiveness can be found in the smallest of gestures, whether we are coming together at work, or in our communities, and here at CMI.
I always look forward to seeing you at CMI events and Shabbat services. Your presence enhances our feeling of community and keeps CMI vibrant and able to fulfill our mission…which is why you are a member.

Congregation Mishkan Israel Information Session for New & Prospective Members Sunday, September 7 from 10:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
New CMI members and guests from our greater New Haven community are invited to learn about our Reform congregation on Sunday September 7, 2025 from 10-11am. Join us to meet CMI lay leaders and hear about our unique array of educational, spiritual and social justice programs that make CMI so special.
Prior to our Information Session, parents are welcome to bring their school age children to experience aspects of our Religious School, beginning with a half-hour family T’filah service at 9:30am led by Rabbi Daniel Schaefer, our new Cantor, Sierra Fox, and Religious School Director, Michelle Goldstein. At 10am children are invited to join an hour of age-appropriate classroom activities, At 11am, parents and children will convene in our large social hall for a Family Fun Day with arts & crafts, a bounce house and lunch with pizza and ice cream.

The Brotherhood of Men and Women would like to announce that we will again be providing coffee, bagels and donuts during religious school on Sunday mornings. The bottomless cup of coffee will be $2.50, a bargain you cannot find anywhere else. In the tradition of supporting local businesses, the bagels and donuts are freshly made at Bagelicious Bagels of Cheshire and at Whitney donuts in Hamden respectively. CMI BROTHERHOOD OF MEN & WOMEN IS SEEKING NEW MEMBERS
The CMI Brotherhood of Men and Women is an auxiliary of CMI. Its purpose is to build community within CMI and to provide support for CMI’s goals and programs. Participation is voluntary. Members of the CMI Brotherhood of Men and Women pay a small membership fee to join. The fee supports the activities. Brotherhood members receive a discount on all activity fees for Brotherhood activities. To join the CMI Brotherhood of Men and Women, visit the CMI website and scroll to download the Membership Form.
Introduction to Judaism - Most classes on Zoom begins Wednesday, September 10 from 7:30 p.m. - 8:30 p.m.
Introduction to Judaism will begin on Wednesday, September 10, 2025 at 7:30 p.m. most classes on zoom. This class will allow you to learn more about your Jewish heritage or prepare you or a loved one for the process of conversion. This is a combined course offered under the auspices of the Board of Rabbis and Cantors, with a number of synagogues co-sponsoring. This 20+ week class explores the basics of Judaism, including history, prayer, sacred texts, and holiday celebrations.
Each student will need a rabbinic sponsor.
Classes will be held from 7:30 p.m. to approximately 8:30 p.m. EST on select Wednesday evenings. Exceptions, such as those for holiday gatherings, are noted in the schedule on the registration form.
The cost of the class is $72 for members of an area Jewish congregation, or $180 for non-members.
Join Rabbi Schaefer and Cantor Fox, as we join with local Reform synagogues to begin our prayers for forgiveness in preparation for the High Holy Days. We will hear from our keynote speaker, James Kimmel, Jr. who will speak on Forgiveness and the Science of Revenge.

High Holiday Drivers
Help your fellow congregants who are unable to drive to CMI for services by volunteering to pick them up on your way. Please contact the office at 203-288-3877 if you are interested in volunteering. Anyone looking for a ride to any of the High Holiday services should call the office so that we can make arrangements.
Livestreaming in the Lounge
We will be livestreaming the High Holy Day services in the lounge in order for parents with restless infants and toddlers to have a place to entertain their children without missing the spiritual connection. CMI will provide limited snacks, drinks and toys.
High Holiday Greeters
Greeters play a crucial role in creating a warm and welcoming atmosphere, setting the tone for the services, and helping to ensure the comfort and safety of our fellow congregants. We will provide training so that all who volunteer can feel comfortable in the role of being an ambassador for CMI. Please contact Jody Dietch if you are interested in being a greeter.
Dues Payments
The High Holy Days are possible through the financial committments of our members. Tickets will be mailed the first week of September to those who have paid at least 25% of their Membership Committment or set up a payment plan in order to receive your tickets. You can pay online through ShulCloud or mail a check to CMI, 785 Ridge Road, Hamden, CT 06517.
Yom Kippur Reflection Service Lay-Leader Request
The Ritual Committee is in need of volunteers to lead 5-7 minute presentations on topics of spiritual significance. This service opportunity is for individual reflection on the past, present, and future with the aid of original and thoughtfully selected writings and music. If you are interested in taking part, please email Stan Friedman or David Chevan.
Parking Safety
This year there will only be traffic cones set up to designate 2 rows of handicapped parking spaces. Please do not park in those spaces unless you have a handicap tag or you are severely inhibited from parking further away. Please drive very slowly and be mindful of pedestrians and other cars in the parking lot.
CMI LIBRARY NEWS
A Special Donation
The CMI Library was very fortunate this summer to receive a donation of over 130 books from Martha Simpson. Martha is a volunteer in the library and a retired children’s librarian in a town library. She also serves on the Sydney Taylor Book Award committee. All the books donated were nominated for the award.
The CMI Library accepts donations of books in good condition that contain Jewish content and/or are written by Jewish authors.

Are you interested in a book on the High Holidays for your own reading or to share with young adults or children? Selected books, both fiction and non-fiction, on Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are on display in the library and are available for loan. Books range from picture books to adult non-fiction books. Holiday picture books for young children are located in colorful bins under the window. Visit the library and explore the collection. A full bibliography of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur books in our collection is available in the library.
CMI Library Operations
All CMI members are automatically patrons of the CMI Library. Volunteers are available Sundays during religious school hours and other times by appointment to assist members in the use of the library. You will receive your CMI library patron number during your first visit as well as instruction in how to use the library’s circulation computer to find and check out books. After that, CMI members can visit the library anytime the building is open. Beginning Thursday, September 12th, a CMI member with a patron ID will be able to access the library database from anywhere with internet access.
